Tansy McNulty, a former corporate executive, has embarked on a mission to eradicate police violence by 2038. Her organization, 1 Million Madly Motivated Moms (1M4), aims to protect Black families and prevent tragedies through community-driven initiatives and innovative solutions.
Black Mothers Unite Against Police Brutality
McNulty founded 1M4 in 2018 after leaving her corporate job. The organization harnesses the power of Black mothers to combat systemic issues affecting their communities. These women, driven by love for their children, are at the forefront of creating lasting change.
“It is important that Black mothers fuel the work to end police violence since we have the greatest vested interest in truly ending this systemic issue,” McNulty told ESSENCE. She emphasized the unique perspective and motivation that Black mothers bring to this fight.
Innovative Approaches to Community Safety
1M4 focuses on prevention rather than just accountability. The organization has developed groundbreaking resources to address community needs and reduce interactions with law enforcement.
One such initiative is “The Right Response,” a directory of 250 alternative response teams across the nation. These teams can handle mental health, behavioral health, and substance use disorder emergencies without police involvement.
From Corporate Success to Community Advocacy
McNulty’s journey from corporate America to community advocacy began in 2016. Returning from vacation while pregnant, she was confronted with news of multiple Black men dying at the hands of police.
The stark contrast between these tragic events and her colleagues’ silence at work sparked a desire for change. McNulty explained, “It was an experience that made me want to do something more purposeful, especially as I was going to bring a Black child into the world.”
Addressing the Unseen Victims of Police Violence
1M4 recognizes that Black women often bear the unseen burden of police brutality. The organization provides financial support to these women during challenging times.
McNulty highlighted the multifaceted roles Black mothers play in the aftermath of police violence. “Black mothers are the ones tasked with fundraising for legal expenses while learning how to maneuver the inequitable legal system,” she said.
Technology and Partnerships for a Safer Future
Looking ahead, 1M4 is exploring technological solutions to enhance community safety. The organization is partnering with tech startups to develop cell phone apps focused on safety.
McNulty’s vision extends beyond her own organization. She encourages community involvement, stating, “We hope that when you see and read about 1M4 that you feel compelled to join us and ensure your local community is aware of and equipped to prevent and reduce state-sanctioned harm.”
