Tyler Perry has stepped in to help 81-year-old Brenda Daurham move closer to returning home. The filmmaker paid a $17,827.96 mechanic’s lien against her Illinois property.
The payment removes a major financial burden that had kept Daurham from moving forward. However, her dispute with Allstate over a denied insurance claim is still unresolved.
Daurham has been away from her Markham, Illinois, home for more than six months. Her troubles began after a burst pipe caused major water damage inside the house.

The $17,827.96 payment covers restoration work performed after the water damage. A mechanic’s lien had been placed on the property after the work remained unpaid.
Burst Pipe Leaves 81-Year-Old Homeowner Displaced
Daurham’s ordeal started on February 14. A pipe beneath her kitchen sink failed and sent water through several parts of her home.
The damage became severe enough to make the house uninhabitable. As a result, Daurham spent more than six months away from the property.
She said she had paid for homeowners’ insurance for more than 40 years. Therefore, she expected the damage to receive coverage under her policy.
However, Allstate denied the claim. Documents reviewed by Fox 32 Chicago showed the insurer cited wear, deterioration, and seepage exclusions.
Insurance Dispute With Allstate Remains Unresolved
Excel Fire and Water Damage Restoration Services handled mitigation work at the property. The company later challenged Allstate’s decision on the insurance claim.
According to the restoration company, its findings pointed to a sudden and accidental plumbing failure. The company asked Allstate to reconsider its decision.
Despite Perry’s payment, Daurham still wants answers from her insurer. She believes paying the lien should not end the larger dispute.
“Tyler Perry paid the lien, and we appreciate it, but we do not feel like Allstate should get away free,” Daurham said.
Her comments show that financial relief has not ended her fight for accountability. She still wants Allstate to address the insurance claim and the damage to her home.
