Supermodel Makes History with First-Ever Model Retrospective
Naomi Campbell, the iconic supermodel, has once again broken new ground in the fashion world. On Wednesday, June 19, 2024, she launched her highly anticipated exhibition, “NAOMI: In Fashion,” at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. This groundbreaking showcase marks the first time a model has been honored with a retrospective at the prestigious institution.
The exhibition, opening to the public on Saturday, June 22, celebrates Campbell’s extraordinary 40-year career and her significant cultural impact. It features approximately 100 looks, ranging from haute couture pieces to memorable outfits that have defined her journey in the fashion industry.
A Curated Journey Through Fashion History
The exhibition, produced in collaboration with Campbell herself, offers a unique perspective on her illustrious career. Visitors can expect to see a carefully curated selection of garments, photographs, and archival collections that highlight Campbell’s trailblazing moments and cultural significance.
Sonnet Stanfill, senior curator of fashion at the V&A, emphasized the importance of this exhibition, stating, “There’s been so many exhibitions about fashion designers and fashion photographers, but the model is often left out of the story. Naomi Campbell’s remarkable 40-year career is really proving that she’s an exemplar in the field.”
Iconic Moments and Designer Collaborations
Among the highlights of the exhibition are several iconic pieces that have defined Campbell’s career. These include the infamous Vivienne Westwood platform heels from her 1993 catwalk fall, recreated with a mannequin planked on the floor, and the sparkling Dolce & Gabbana dress worn during her community service at a New York garbage depot.
The showcase also features collaborations with renowned designers such as Gianni Versace, Thierry Mugler, and Valentino, as well as works by prominent African designers like Kenneth Ize and Thebe Magugu. This diverse collection underscores Campbell’s influence across the global fashion landscape.
Breaking Barriers and Championing Diversity
Throughout her career, Campbell has consistently broken barriers for Black models in the fashion industry. She was the first Black model to grace the covers of French Vogue and Time magazine, as well as the September issue of American Vogue.
The exhibition not only celebrates these achievements but also highlights Campbell’s ongoing efforts to champion diversity and support emerging creatives in the industry. Her personal commentary, both written and audio, provides insight into key moments of her career and the impact she has made.
A Cultural Icon’s Legacy
“NAOMI: In Fashion” is more than just a display of beautiful clothes; it’s a testament to Campbell’s enduring influence on fashion and popular culture. From her early days as a 15-year-old scouted in Covent Garden to her status as a global supermodel, the exhibition chronicles her journey with humor, style, and historical significance.
The exhibition, which runs until April 2025, offers visitors a chance to experience Campbell’s world, including a makeshift catwalk for those inspired to imitate her iconic runway walk. As Campbell herself stated, “I’m honored to be asked by the V&A to share my life in clothes with the world.”
