Representative LaMonica McIver announced the birth of her second child, a baby girl, on October 1, 2026. With that delivery she became the first member of New Jersey’s congressional delegation to give birth while serving in office.

McIver shared the news herself in a public post. “She’s here! We just welcomed our beautiful baby girl and words can’t describe how blessed my family feels,” she said. She did not release the baby’s name, exact birth date or weight, and the family has kept those details private.

McIver represents New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District and has held the seat since September 2024. She is the first Black woman to represent that district. Her husband is Khalif Thomas, and the couple has an older daughter.

The pregnancy itself was something she chose to talk about openly. When she announced it on May 15, 2026, she said it followed years of fertility challenges. That is the part of this story worth sitting with. Black women carry fertility struggles quietly more often than not, and a sitting member of Congress naming hers out loud gives other women permission to stop pretending the road was easy.

There is a practical dimension too. Members of Congress have no formal maternity leave structure and cannot vote by proxy under current House rules, so a representative who gives birth while serving is managing a recovery and a voting record at the same time. McIver is now the New Jersey delegation’s first test of how that actually works.

The district she serves covers Newark and surrounding communities in Essex, Hudson and Union counties, a constituency where maternal health outcomes for Black women have been a standing concern for local advocates and clinicians.

For now the news is simpler than any of that. A woman who said she waited a long time for this is holding her daughter, and the record books in her home state changed on the same day.
