Melyssa Ford spent part of October 1, 2026 defending a 64-year-old woman’s face, and she was right to.
Jasmine Guy returned as Whitley Gilbert in the A Different World sequel, and a portion of the internet responded by grading how she has aged. Ford, a podcast personality and former video model, took the premise apart on Instagram.
“Women cannot win for losing,” she wrote. “If a woman gets work done, she lacks self-love … If she doesn’t, she’s letting herself go.”
Then the line worth keeping: “Aging naturally is not an act of bravery. It’s a privilege.”
That is the correction. The compliment women are handed now, that it takes courage to let yourself look your age, still treats the aging as the problem and the woman as somebody enduring it. Ford’s point is that plenty of women did not get to turn 64. The ones who did are not being brave. They are being alive.
She also named the asymmetry. Men go gray and nobody calls it a decision.
Guy has said the internet can be brutal to women as they get older. She is right, and she should not have to be the one saying it.
“Aging doesn’t require bravery. It needs respect,” Ford wrote. “Leave women alone and let us get older in peace.”
