Motherhood has transformed Coi Leray in ways she never expected. The Grammy-nominated rapper is opening up about her postpartum journey, balancing music with raising her daughter Miyoco, and why she wants new mothers to make time for themselves.

Speaking backstage in New Orleans, Coi described becoming a mother as a complete life change. She also revealed that music has become one of the biggest tools helping her navigate postpartum while embracing this new chapter.

Coi Leray Opens Up About the Realities of Postpartum

Coi Leray did not shy away from discussing a topic many women experience but often keep private. Reflecting on life after welcoming her daughter Miyoco, she said motherhood has changed her mentally, physically, and emotionally.

“Motherhood changed me. It’s like a total 180—mentally, physically, emotionally.”

The rapper also revealed that she has been dealing with postpartum, something she believes many people do not realize.

“Speaking of motherhood, a lot of people don’t even know that I’m going through postpartum. And it’s real.”

Coi explained that creating music and spending time with her daughter have helped her through difficult moments. She said those two things continue to give her strength during this season of life.

Her honesty adds to previous moments when she shared parts of motherhood online. Last year, she told fans that breastfeeding had been far more challenging than she expected.

New Song “Outside” Encourages Moms to Take Time for Themselves

Coi’s latest music reflects her personal experiences as a new mother. During Coca-Cola’s Shine City activation at the 2026 Essence Festival, she introduced her new song, “Outside.”

Although the record carries an upbeat summer sound, its message is much deeper. Coi said the song was inspired by mothers who deserve time to recharge.

“‘Outside’ was actually inspired because of new moms. Grab a babysitter, girl. Take some time off work and get out here. Even if it’s one weekend.”

Her message reminds mothers that caring for themselves is also part of caring for their families. Experts have long noted that self-care can play an important role in emotional well-being after childbirth.

During her performance, Coi dedicated part of the show to new moms in the audience. She also performed fan favorites while surprising the crowd with a remix of Kelis’ classic hit “Milkshake.”

Coi Leray Balances Motherhood, Fashion, and Beauty

Even while adjusting to motherhood, Coi continues to express herself through fashion. She arrived on stage wearing a white Diesel crop top paired with low-rise cargo pants and sneakers. The relaxed outfit reflected her signature mix of streetwear and confidence.

She described her personal style as a blend of masculine and feminine fashion with effortless confidence.

“My style is very masculine, very feminine, and I have a lot of sex appeal. But the sex appeal is natural.”

Laughing, she added that she may start wearing more clothes in the future.

Beyond fashion, skincare remains one of her biggest beauty priorities. Coi credited her longtime makeup artist and friend Nico for teaching her the importance of building healthy skin before applying makeup.

She explained that a strong skincare routine creates the perfect foundation for any beauty look.

Essence Festival Performance Highlights a New Chapter

Coi Leray performed during Coca-Cola’s Shine City experience as part of the company’s 31-year partnership with the Essence Festival. She shared the stage with artists including Mario, Normani, and Destin Conrad.

Stephanie Eaddy, Senior Director of Cultural Marketing at The Coca-Cola Company, said the partnership continues to celebrate Black culture while creating meaningful experiences for festival attendees.

“For 31 years, Coca-Cola has been proud to stand alongside ESSENCE in celebrating the voices, stories and experiences that shape culture while investing in the communities that help move it forward.”

She added that this year’s activation combined music, conversations, and interactive experiences designed to inspire attendees while highlighting HBCUs and emerging entrepreneurs.

For Coi Leray, the event represented more than another performance. It became another opportunity to show that women can embrace motherhood, pursue their careers, and speak honestly about postpartum without hiding their experiences.

Her openness also sends a powerful message to new mothers. Asking for help, taking a break, and making time for personal healing are not signs of weakness. Instead, they are important parts of the motherhood journey.
