MoPOP Global Pop Culture Access Expands Under Michele Y. Smith Leadership
Michele Y. Smith is leading the Museum of Pop Culture in Seattle as it continues to grow as a global cultural space. The museum, known as MoPOP, has spent over 25 years showcasing film, music, fashion, gaming, and storytelling in interactive ways. It attracts more than 500,000 visitors each year and remains one of the most visited pop culture institutions in the United States.
The museum holds over 80,000 artifacts and features more than 10 exhibitions. It also marked its silver jubilee with MoPOP25, a celebration that brought together different audiences through full day cultural activities. Under her leadership, MoPOP continues to position pop culture as something global, shared, and deeply connected to everyday identity.
Black Music Exhibits Take Center Stage at MoPOP
A key focus under Michele Y. Smith is the elevation of Black music history inside the museum experience. One major example is the exhibit Never Turn Back: Echoes of African American Music, created with curator Adeerya Johnson. The exhibit highlights gospel, blues, and jazz as core foundations of American music culture.
It also connects past and present, showing how Black music traditions influence modern artists today. The exhibit explores how sound, resistance, and identity are tied together in Black cultural expression. Visitors experience interactive storytelling that traces music from early roots to modern global influence, including today’s leading performers.
Wellness First Leadership Shapes Daily Work Culture at MoPOP
Michele Y. Smith has built a leadership style centered on wellness, discipline, and personal structure. She starts her day at 4:30 am and often attends a 5:30 am Pilates session before work. After exercise, she focuses on journaling, planning, and setting goals for both her personal life and her leadership role.
She brings this same approach into workplace culture. Employees are encouraged to take time off, rest when needed, and avoid burnout. She has made it clear that when staff are off work, they should truly be off work. This approach reflects her belief that healthy people create stronger and more creative institutions.
Authenticity and Culture Drive Michele Y. Smith Leadership Style
Michele Y. Smith often speaks about authenticity as a core value in leadership. She describes pop culture as something she has always lived and understood naturally. From fashion and film to music and social media trends, she stays connected to cultural movements and brings them into museum conversations.
She also draws from her Philadelphia upbringing and strong Black cultural roots. She emphasizes that leadership should reflect identity, not erase it. As she puts it, “pop culture has always been in my DNA.” Her approach encourages others to lead with curiosity, resilience, and personal truth while shaping spaces that reflect real cultural voices.
