Shaina Rainford never planned to build a beauty empire. She was focused on her work as a board-certified nurse practitioner. Yet one powerful family experience completely changed the direction of her life. Today, her brand, Bask & Lather, stands as an 8-figure company and one of the most trusted Black-owned hair growth brands in the world.

The company appears on the 2025 Inc. 5000 list of America’s fastest-growing private firms. It ranks No. 1008 overall and No. 20 among retail and CPG brands. It is also the No. 1 Black-owned hair growth oil brand on Amazon and the first Black-owned brand featured in TikTok’s Super Brand Club.

A Family Crisis That Sparked a Global Haircare Movement

The journey began when Rainford’s younger sister suffered a severe scalp condition. The illness caused complete hair loss and left doctors unsure if growth would ever return. Their mother refused to accept that answer. Motivated by love and holistic knowledge, she created two natural products: a scalp stimulator and a hair elixir.

The results amazed the family. Her sister’s hair grew back thicker, longer, and visibly healthier. This moment planted the seed for something much bigger, even though Rainford did not yet know it.

Years later, Rainford faced her own struggle. After contracting COVID-19 in 2020, her hair became brittle and shed rapidly. She returned to her mother’s formula, hoping it would help once again. The transformation was immediate and powerful. She described this moment as a “lightbulb moment,” one that pushed her to think beyond personal use.

Launching Bask & Lather With No Investors and No Loans

By the end of 2020, Rainford launched Bask & Lather Co. The brand grew quickly because it offered real results, not clever marketing. Within just three months, the company was earning six figures in monthly revenue. However, the growth came from word-of-mouth and organic social media—not celebrities or paid influencers.

Rainford built the company debt-free. She did not take investors, loans, or venture capital funding. Instead, she reinvested every dollar from the early sales. She often said she made “every dollar work twice.” This approach forced her to learn margins, demand patterns, and what customers truly valued.

As she explained, “Nursing teaches you to diagnose before you prescribe. That same mindset applies to business. I look at root causes, data, and patterns before making a decision.”

Authenticity, Community, and Real Results Drove the Brand’s Rise

Rainford chose a different path from competitors. She focused on authentic storytelling instead of expensive marketing. She shared her family’s healing journey and showed real before-and-after results. This honesty helped customers feel understood, and many became passionate ambassadors.

Her business philosophy remains simple: focus on product quality, serve the community, and avoid chasing trends. She also believes that “Consistency, transparency, and storytelling will take you further than a big budget ever could.”

Because she grew up in the Bronx, Rainford understands how access and representation affect opportunities. This is why Bask & Lather gives back through scholarships, school supply drives, and support for mothers and small businesses. “Bask & Lather was born out of love and healing,” she said. “It was never just about profit.”

A Mission to Uplift Women and Build Sustainable Success

Rainford feels responsible for using her success to uplift others. She supports school donations, childcare efforts, and programs that help young entrepreneurs. “Success means nothing if I can’t use it to uplift others,” she shared.

Today, Bask & Lather is expanding into global markets. The team is working on retail partnerships, international compliance in the UK and Canada, and new innovations in scalp health. The brand currently operates as an 8-figure company with a team of more than 15 people.

Rainford continues to rely on her healthcare background as she builds long-term systems. “My focus now is building long-term sustainability—creating systems, products, and community initiatives that ensure Bask & Lather continues to thrive for decades to come,” she said.

Her journey proves that a personal struggle can spark a movement that touches millions. And through Bask & Lather, Rainford continues to honor the love, care, and determination that started it all.
