Mara Brock Akil Set to Receive the Norman Lear Achievement Award at the 2026 PGA Awards for Her Powerful Legacy of Black Women–Centered Storytelling

The Producers Guild of America has announced that Mara Brock Akil will receive the Norman Lear Achievement Award at the 37th Annual Producers Guild Awards. The event will take place on February 28, 2026, at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles. This major honor celebrates producers who have reshaped television through purpose, creativity, and long-lasting cultural impact.

PGA Honors Mara Brock Akil for Her Groundbreaking Television Legacy

Mara Brock Akil’s selection for the 2026 Norman Lear Achievement Award highlights her remarkable influence across more than two decades of television. The award recognizes producers whose work has shaped the industry in powerful ways, and Brock Akil stands among icons who previously received it. Past honorees include Shonda Rhimes, Ryan Murphy, Mindy Kaling, J.J. Abrams, and the late Norman Lear.

PGA presidents Donald De Line and Stephanie Allain praised her unmatched storytelling. They noted that her shows like Girlfriends, The Game, and Being Mary Jane set a high standard for creativity and emotional truth. They also highlighted her recent series Forever, which continues to show her commitment to deep and intentional storytelling.

Celebrating a Visionary Who Centered Black Women’s Lives

Mara Brock Akil’s work has consistently placed Black women at the center of the narrative. She created worlds where Black women could be joyful, complex, vulnerable, ambitious, and fully human. Her storytelling has shaped how audiences understand Black womanhood on screen.

In her response to the honor, Brock Akil shared her deep gratitude. She explained that Norman Lear’s legacy taught her that stories can move culture, challenge old ideas, and build community. She called storytelling a privilege, adding that this recognition motivates her to keep championing characters who reflect the beauty and courage found in everyday life.

A Career Built on Culture-Shifting Television

Throughout her career, Brock Akil has produced hundreds of television episodes. Her body of work forms a powerful foundation in modern Black television. Girlfriends helped define a generation of Black womanhood on screen, while The Game and Being Mary Jane expanded her reach and impact. She also served as an executive producer on Netflix’s Stamped From the Beginning, which reached the Academy Awards Documentary Feature Shortlist.

Her most recent success, Netflix’s 2025 adaptation of Judy Blume’s Forever, earned rave reviews and a renewal for a second season. Her consistency and vision have earned her multiple honors, including Essence Magazine’s Visionary Award and the prestigious Brandon Tartikoff Legacy Award. She has also been listed many times on Variety and The Hollywood Reporter’s industry power lists.

Looking Ahead to the 2026 PGA Awards Night

The 2026 Producers Guild Awards will be led by event chairs Mike Farah and Joe Farrell and produced by Anchor Street Collective. Branden Chapman serves as executive producer, with Carleen Cappelletti as co-executive producer. The award is sponsored by Delta Air Lines, with additional sponsorship from McLaren, Glenfiddich, and GreenSlate.

As the industry prepares for the February 2026 ceremony, many see this moment as a celebration not only of Mara Brock Akil’s accomplishments but also of her enduring impact on Black women storytellers. Her work continues to shape culture, shift narratives, and inspire new voices to tell their truth on screen.
