Carrying Forward a Legendary Legacy
Karla Redding-Andrews is expanding the reach of the Otis Redding Foundation far beyond the United States. As the daughter of legendary soul singer Otis Redding, she carries the responsibility of keeping his legacy alive while shaping it for the future.
Her work is deeply rooted in the values passed down by her mother, Zelma Redding. Zelma stepped into the role of protector and builder of the Otis Redding estate after the singer’s tragic death at age 26. Today, Karla serves as vice president and executive director of the foundation, managing global programs that inspire and educate young people through music.
The foundation’s work includes music education, scholarships, and youth empowerment projects that reflect Otis Redding’s commitment to giving back to the community. Karla’s leadership has helped connect these programs to young people across the world.
The Strength and Vision of Zelma Redding
When Otis Redding passed away, Zelma was just 25 years old. She was left to raise three children, protect the rights to her husband’s music, and maintain the family’s 300-acre ranch, which she later expanded to 600 acres.
She returned to school to earn a business degree, put her children through private school and college, and ensured that the family’s financial and cultural legacy remained secure. “I got to protect what Otis lost his life for,” Zelma said.
Her determination and business skills have kept Otis Redding’s name, image, and music under family control. “You don’t do anything with Otis Redding until you get it approved by Zelma,” Karla shared.
Expanding the Foundation’s Global Impact
Under Karla’s leadership, the Otis Redding Foundation has moved beyond its local roots in Macon, Georgia, to reach young people worldwide. Using her background in marketing and PR, Karla has built partnerships, launched global initiatives, and expanded the scope of music education programs.
Her sons, Justin and Jarred, now play active roles in the foundation, leading international projects and managing merchandising. “They are proud to be a part of it,” Karla said, describing how they naturally joined the mission they grew up around.
The family continues to operate the Otis Redding Museum and the Otis Redding Center for the Arts, ensuring that future generations understand and connect with the singer’s music and message.
A Mission That Lives On
Karla sees the foundation’s work as more than honoring her father—it is about empowering children, especially Black and Brown youth, to find their voice through the arts. “It’s not for personal gain—it’s for our community,” she said.
Looking ahead, she plans to keep growing the foundation’s influence and finding new ways to inspire young people worldwide. “We have created something magical and special all in the name of the Otis Redding legacy,” she said.
The foundation’s mission to “empower, enrich, and motivate” continues to guide their work, ensuring Otis Redding’s love for music and community remains alive.
