Monica Swen Crowned as Liberia’s New Environmental Queen
Liberia has a new Miss Earth titleholder. Monica Swen, a 23-year-old from Grand Kru County, was crowned Miss Earth Liberia 2025 on August 2. The pageant was held during its seventh annual edition, and Swen proudly represented the element “Sun.”
The competition ended with outgoing queen Mary W. Kermon passing on the crown. Swen’s victory earned her a Chevrolet Malibu worth about $9,000 and several ambassadorial deals. She stood out with a bold African fabric swimsuit and a stunning evening gown, impressing the judges.
Her win came after she outshined strong competition from Beyons T. Nimely, the first runner-up, and Dorcas G. Worlobah, the second runner-up.
A Strong Plan to Address Sanitation and Drainage Issues
During the question-and-answer round, Swen shared her vision for improving sanitation in Liberia. She announced plans to form a sanitation team that would include her fellow contestants. The goal is to create awareness and encourage cleaner environments in local communities.
“I will set up a sanitation team, which will include my fellow contestants, to carry out sanitation awareness within the environment,” Swen said. “I believe that each of us here faces sanitation problems in our environment, and I need them to share their thoughts with me on this journey.”
Her plan aligns with the Miss Earth platform, which focuses on environmental awareness and community-driven solutions.
Advocating for Cleaner Streets and Functional Drainage
In a radio interview, Swen emphasized the need to address drainage challenges in Liberia. She highlighted that poor drainage systems cause flooding when it rains, especially in her community.
“Whenever it rains in my community, I notice water flowing on the road, all because of a poor drainage system,” she said. “We as a people need to take good care of the few drainage systems we have by not allowing dirt to clog them. Cleaning our drainage is everyone’s responsibility.”
Swen’s advocacy is not just about beauty but about inspiring action. She hopes to encourage citizens to take ownership of keeping their surroundings clean.
Representing Liberia on the Global Stage
Swen is currently a sophomore studying Banking and Finance at the Adventist University of West Africa. With her new crown, she will represent Liberia at the international Miss Earth competition.
Her journey as Miss Earth Liberia will focus on environmental advocacy, community engagement, and inspiring young women. She sees her role as an opportunity to bring attention to issues like waste management and sustainable living.
By combining beauty, leadership, and a strong vision for change, Monica Swen is ready to make her reign as Miss Earth Liberia both impactful and memorable.
