Doechii Uses BET Stage to Speak Truth to Power

The 2025 BET Awards delivered more than music and trophies this year. Rising star Doechii shook the room when she turned her acceptance speech into a bold message about justice.

After winning Best Female Hip Hop Artist, the “Anxiety” rapper traded the usual thank-yous for a powerful call-out. She addressed the ongoing protest outside the Peacock Theater, where authorities had started cracking down hard.

“I do want to address what’s happening right now, outside the building,” Doechii told the crowd, her voice steady but emotional.

A Protest Interrupted by Military Forces

Outside the theater, peaceful protestors gathered to push back against aggressive immigration raids. But things took a harsh turn as military troops, ordered by former President Donald Trump, showed up to break up the crowds.

According to NBC News, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained dozens during a series of surprise raids. Protests in the Downtown Los Angeles (DTLA) area quickly escalated.

Doechii made it clear she wouldn’t stay silent about it. “These are ruthless attacks that are creating fear and chaos in our communities,” she said.

Doechii Speaks Up for Black Communities and the Oppressed

In her speech, Doechii reminded everyone of the bigger issue: the right to protest. She slammed Trump’s decision to deploy the military as an abuse of power meant to silence people.

“This isn’t about public safety,” California Governor Gavin Newsom said earlier. “It’s about stroking a dangerous President’s ego.”

Doechii echoed that frustration. “I feel it is my responsibility as an artist to use this moment to speak up for all oppressed people,” she declared, earning applause from the audience.

BET Awards Turn Into a Stage for Truth

While the BET Awards traditionally celebrate Black talent, this year’s show proved it’s also a platform for truth. Doechii’s decision to use her first big award moment to speak about justice reminded everyone that the culture is about more than entertainment.

Per AP reports, the protests began after Trump sent 2,000 National Guard troops to the area. Tensions boiled over during the weekend, with June 8 seeing the most violence yet.

Doechii’s bravery struck a chord both inside the theater and across social media, where fans praised her courage and honesty.
