A Historic Milestone for UK Politics
Princess Opeyemi Bright has made history as the youngest mayor in the UK at just 29 years old. Sworn in on May 16, 2025, she now serves as the First Citizen of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.
Bright, a British-born Nigerian, won the mayoral election in March. She called her victory “nothing short of God’s grace” during her inauguration. Her journey inspires young leaders to step forward and serve their communities.
A Rising Star in British Politics
Bright first entered politics at 22, becoming Barking and Dagenham’s youngest-ever Labour councillor. Over seven years, she championed youth empowerment, economic growth, and social inclusion.
Her leadership style focuses on visibility and grassroots engagement. “Being Mayor is more than a title—it’s a promise to uplift every corner of our Borough,” she said on Instagram. She plans to support schools, businesses, and local events.
A Proud Nigerian Heritage
Bright proudly embraces her Nigerian roots. “As a proud Nigerian, I will represent my heritage with humility and excellence,” she declared. Her success adds to a growing list of Nigerians excelling in global politics.
Figures like UK Business Secretary Kemi Badenoch and US politician Esther Agbaje show how Nigerians abroad are reshaping leadership. Bright’s story proves heritage and hard work can open doors anywhere.
A Family Legacy of Service
Public service runs in Bright’s family. Her mother, Dr. Afolasade Bright, was Hackney’s Civic Mayor from 2006 to 2007. Her father, Pastor Gbolahan Bright, is a respected minister in the Redeemed Christian Church of God.
Bright’s upbringing clearly influenced her path. After working in investment banking and tech (including a role at Uber UK), she chose politics to give back. “I’m taking a year off my corporate career to serve my Borough,” she explained.
A Vision for Barking and Dagenham
Bright’s plans include boosting local businesses, improving schools, and engaging residents directly. She vows to be a hands-on mayor, walking high streets and celebrating community achievements.
Her message is clear: leadership means action. “I’ll be present, visible, and committed to making a difference,” she promised. With her energy and vision, Barking and Dagenham’s future looks bright.
