Lillian Ahenkan, widely known as FlexMami, is redefining what it means to be a modern media personality. Through a career that spans DJing, television, radio, writing, and digital content, she has grown into one of the most influential voices shaping Australia’s youth culture.

At the same time, she is using her platform to do more than entertain. FlexMami is actively challenging gaps in the beauty industry and pushing for stronger representation, all while encouraging honest conversations about identity, race, and belonging.

FlexMami’s Multi-Platform Career Shapes Australian Youth Culture

FlexMami has built a career that reflects both versatility and intention. Often describing herself as a “slashie,” she moves seamlessly between roles—DJ, presenter, writer, and influencer—creating a presence that goes far beyond a single industry.

Her rise did not happen by accident. Instead, it came from recognizing early on that her voice had value. “I’ve always thought that I had an important voice,” she said, crediting her upbringing for instilling that confidence. As a result, she leaned into opportunities that allowed her to speak, connect, and be heard across different platforms.

Today, her vibrant style and direct way of communicating—what she calls “real speak”—have helped her connect with a wide audience. Consequently, she has become a key figure in Australia’s urban youth culture, influencing both conversations and creative spaces.

From DJ Booth to Media Influence: Building a Career With Purpose

FlexMami’s journey into the spotlight started with DJing, but not just for music alone. For her, it was also a gateway into spaces where she could express herself and gain visibility.

Over time, that exposure opened doors to speaking roles, including television and radio. She intentionally used those platforms to amplify her voice, ensuring her ideas reached wider audiences. “I knew that I had a perspective I wanted to share,” she explained, highlighting her focus on communication over aesthetics.

Initially, her goal was simple: “just to get paid to be myself.” However, as her platform grew, so did her purpose. She began to shift from personal success toward creating meaningful impact, especially for communities that often go unheard.

Challenging Beauty Industry Gaps and Representation Issues

Beyond her career success, FlexMami has been outspoken about the limitations within the beauty industry. While some brands have made efforts to include darker skin tones, she points out that these efforts often fall short.

For example, she has highlighted how certain brands offer foundation shades for darker skin but fail to provide matching products. This lack of consistency, she argues, reveals deeper structural issues. In some cases, darker shades are even harder to access, with products only available online.

She once described the experience as requiring “twice the effort for half the result.” Through these critiques, FlexMami is not just calling out problems—she is pushing for real change, urging brands to move beyond surface-level representation.

Navigating Identity, Racism, and Finding Her Voice

FlexMami’s journey has also been deeply personal. Growing up in Sydney as the child of Ghanaian immigrants, she initially struggled with her identity, especially in environments where she felt singled out.

At one point, she admitted to developing internalized racism, trying to distance herself from her Ghanaian roots to fit in. However, over time, she began to confront those feelings and better understand her experiences.

This shift became a turning point. Instead of hiding parts of herself, she chose to embrace her full identity and speak openly about it. As a result, her platform has become a space for honest conversations about race, belonging, and self-acceptance.

Owning Her Narrative and Amplifying Black Voices

As her influence grew, FlexMami became more aware of the limitations of mainstream media. She noticed that important topics, especially around identity and intersectionality, were often diluted to fit broader audiences.

In response, she took control of her narrative. By using her personal platforms, including YouTube, she now shares her thoughts without restrictions. From lifestyle advice to deeper discussions, her content reflects her unfiltered perspective.

Importantly, she has rejected the idea of being the sole representative for Black people in Australia. Instead, she focuses on amplifying diverse voices while encouraging critical thinking and self-expression. Looking ahead, she wants her ideas and intellect to take center stage, rather than being defined only by her appearance or style.
