Monique Rodriguez, founder and CEO of Mielle Organics, captivated the audience at the AFROTECH™ Conference with her inspiring journey from being a self-taught “kitchen chemist” to running one of the fastest-growing Black-owned beauty brands in the world. Her talk centered on leadership, teamwork, and empowering Black women entrepreneurs.

From Kitchen Chemist to CEO

Rodriguez shared her humble beginnings, creating homemade haircare solutions in her kitchen, with a group of tech professionals and aspiring entrepreneurs. What started as a personal passion blossomed into Mielle Organics, a multimillion-dollar beauty brand known for its natural haircare products catering to women with textured hair.

Rodriguez emphasized that leadership often begins with knowing your strengths and weaknesses. “Having a sense of self-awareness is key. You need to understand what you’re good at and where you need help,” she said. This self-awareness helped her grow her company by surrounding herself with experts.

The Power of Collaboration in Leadership

A standout message from Rodriguez’s speech was the importance of admitting when you don’t have all the answers. “As a CEO, I am the first to admit I don’t know everything, and I’m not ashamed to say that,” Rodriguez explained. “What I do know is how to find smart people who know more than me in areas where I don’t.”

Her humility resonated with many in attendance. Rodriguez’s leadership style focuses on building strong teams, encouraging collaboration, and trusting others to fill the gaps. She noted that surrounding herself with the right people has been vital to Mielle Organics’ success, as teamwork remains one of her core values as a leader.

Empowering Black Women Entrepreneurs

Throughout her career, Rodriguez has aimed to inspire other Black women to pursue their entrepreneurial dreams. Her presence at AFROTECH™ highlights the growing influence of Black women in the beauty and tech industries. As more women rise to leadership positions, Rodriguez continues to advocate for the representation and empowerment of women of color.

Rodriguez stressed the importance of lifting others as you climb. “It’s not just about building a business; it’s about making sure others succeed with you,” she told the audience. This mindset has guided her journey as she seeks to inspire future generations of Black women entrepreneurs to reach new heights.

Representation Matters in Leadership

The AFROTECH™ audience was eager to hear Rodriguez’s insights on what makes a successful leader in today’s world. Beyond humility and collaboration, Rodriguez emphasized representation in leadership roles. Her success with Mielle Organics shows that Black women can thrive as entrepreneurs and innovators, helping to pave the way for others.

Rodriguez’s rise to the top of the beauty industry, alongside her advocacy for teamwork, speaks to the power of representation and community. As Mielle Organics continues to expand, she remains committed to empowering other women to follow in her footsteps, making her a trailblazer not only in beauty but in leadership itself.

Inspiring the Next Generation

Rodriguez closed her AFROTECH™ talk by encouraging young entrepreneurs to trust their journeys, no matter how unconventional they may seem. Her path from mixing ingredients in her kitchen to leading a global beauty brand serves as a reminder that success is possible for those who dream big and work smart.
