Winnie Dortch, a reporter for WOIO 19 News in Cleveland, was shot during an apparent domestic violence altercation on Monday morning. Police officers responding to reports of an argument and later gunshots in Lakewood, Ohio, discovered Dortch and a man identified as 34-year-old Bryant Carter with gunshot wounds. Carter was pronounced dead at the scene, and authorities believe he shot Dortch before taking his own life.

Dortch was immediately rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center, where she underwent surgery for her injuries. According to updates from her news station, she is now recovering, though she remains hospitalized. WOIO News Director Brian Sinclair shared heartfelt wishes for her recovery, stating, “Our prayers are with Winnie, her young daughter, and the many other victims of domestic violence in our community.”

Tragedy Strikes Just Before Exciting Career Move

The tragic event comes at a pivotal moment in Dortch’s career. Just weeks ago, she announced her upcoming move to Chicago’s WGN-TV, marking a significant milestone in her journalism journey. In a social media post from September 18, Dortch shared her excitement about returning to her hometown, expressing, “For years, I’ve been trying to make it back home to the best city in the Midwest! My childhood dream has come true.”

Dortch’s colleagues at 19 News have expressed their sadness over the incident, but they remain hopeful that she will make a full recovery in time for her exciting transition to her new role in Chicago. The community is rallying around her, offering support as she heals from the traumatic event.
