CBS News has renewed Gayle King’s contract, showing strong support for the 69-year-old co-host of CBS Mornings. Despite major budget cuts at CBS, King is committed to the network during this challenging time.

The company is slashing $500 million from its budget ahead of a proposed merger with Hollywood studio Skydance. King’s renewal highlights her importance to CBS, especially as the network navigates these financial challenges.

    King’s Commitment Amid Budget Cuts

King’s new contract details are not fully disclosed. Insiders suggest she may have accepted a pay cut from her reported salary of $13 million. This decision reflects her dedication to protecting jobs on her show. “Gayle genuinely cares about people,” a source told The Post. “She’s the kind of person who would take a pay cut to protect jobs on her show.”

Even though CBS Mornings has struggled with ratings, King’s contract renewal indicates that CBS values her presence. The network aims to build a stronger morning show, making King a crucial part of that vision.

A New Direction for CBS Mornings

CBS CEO Wendy McMahon is investing in the CBS Mornings brand. Plans include expanding the show to a third hour in select markets. “Securing Gayle King is a key move for CBS, as she remains a central figure on the morning show,” a network source noted. Locking down King solidifies CBS’s future and its commitment to quality journalism.

The show continues to rank third among morning news programs. However, it has made significant gains in the coveted 25 to 54 age demographic, recently outperforming competitors ABC’s Good Morning America (GMA) 17 times this season. In the second quarter, CBS Mornings trailed GMA by only 68,000 viewers in this crucial group.

    The Impact of High-Profile Interviews

King’s interviews with influential figures have contributed to CBS Mornings’ momentum. She has spoken with personalities such as music mogul Jay-Z, Cherelle Griner (wife of WNBA star Brittney Griner), rapper Megan Thee Stallion, and Kenneth Walker, the boyfriend of Breonna Taylor. These interviews draw in viewers and add depth to the show’s content.

With a total audience of 2.1 million viewers and 426,000 in the 25 to 54 demographic in the second quarter, CBS Mornings is closing the gap with its rivals. GMA attracted 2.8 million total viewers and 494,000 in the demo, while NBC’s Today had 2.7 million total viewers and 620,000 demo viewers.

    Looking Ahead

King’s presence is a significant factor in CBS’s strategy to revitalize CBS Mornings. Her strong commitment during tough times reflects her leadership and passion for journalism. As CBS navigates these changes, King remains a vital part of its future, inspiring both her audience and her colleagues.
