Shero Comics is breaking new ground in the manga world with “Young Grandmaster Choi.” This innovative series features Rayven Johnson, a young Black girl, as its lead character. The story is challenging stereotypes and filling a crucial representation gap in manga and anime.

Black Girl Representation in Manga: A Game-Changing Series

“Young Grandmaster Choi” introduces Rayven Johnson, a six-year-old African American army brat. Rayven moves to Seoul, Korea, where she faces bullying and uses martial arts to cope with her challenges.

Shequeta Smith, creator of the series and founder of Shero Comics, explains, “We wanted to create a series that Black girls and other young women of color can see themselves in, without the typical stereotypes.” This approach marks a significant shift in manga representation.

Empowering Young Readers Through Thoughtful Storytelling

The series focuses on Rayven’s journey of resilience, personal growth, and overcoming obstacles. Unlike many mainstream manga characters, Rayven is not over-sexualized, making the series appropriate for younger readers.

Librarians and young readers are praising “Young Grandmaster Choi” for its fresh approach and positive role model. The series is inspiring girls to be strong, smart, and confident through Rayven’s experiences.

Addressing the Lack of Diversity in Manga and Anime

Despite manga and anime’s global popularity, Black characters in lead roles are rare. “Young Grandmaster Choi” is part of a growing movement to change this narrative.

The series ensures that Black girls are represented authentically and positively in manga. It’s creating a space where Black girls can not only exist but thrive in the stories they love.

Shero Comics: Pioneering Change in the Comic Industry

Shero Comics, founded by Shequeta Smith, is at the forefront of diversifying manga. Their commitment to representation is evident in “Young Grandmaster Choi.”

The company has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund Chapter 2 of the series. This move invites fans to support the continuation of Rayven’s empowering journey.
