Maya Boyd is stepping into one of Marvel’s most recognizable superhero roles.

The 23-year-old Broadway actress has been announced as the new Storm. Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige revealed the casting at D23 2026.

Boyd will play Ororo Munroe in Marvel Studios’ upcoming X-Men movie. The film is expected to arrive in May 2028.

Her casting marks a major moment for the young Black actress. It also gives a fresh face to one of Marvel’s most powerful female superheroes.

Maya Boyd Is Marvel’s New Storm

Feige surprised fans at D23 when he introduced Boyd as the next actress to play Storm. Several actresses had been linked to the role before the announcement.

Names reportedly discussed included Cynthia Erivo, Jayme Lawson, and Yetide Badaki. However, Marvel ultimately chose the young Broadway performer.

Boyd now joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe at an important time. The studio is preparing to bring the X-Men into its main superhero story.

The role also puts Boyd alongside a character with a long history on screen. Storm has remained one of the X-Men’s most recognizable heroes for decades.

Halle Berry Helped Define Storm for a Generation

Halle Berry first played Storm in the original X-Men movie in 2000. She returned for three more films as the weather-controlling mutant.

Berry’s performance helped introduce Storm to millions of moviegoers. Her version also gave Black women a major place within the superhero world.

Alexandra Shipp later played a younger version of Storm. She appeared in two films connected to the rebooted X-Men franchise.

Now, Boyd gets the opportunity to give Ororo Munroe her own new identity. She will also introduce the character to a new generation of Marvel fans.

Maya Boyd Built Her Career on Broadway

Boyd had already built an impressive acting career before landing Storm. She studied at the University of Michigan and earned her bachelor’s degree.

While still in college, she secured a Broadway opportunity at a young age. She later made her New York theater debut in Merrily We Roll Along in 2023.

Her theater experience continued to grow after that production. Boyd later stepped into the title role of Juliet in the hit jukebox musical & Juliet.

She also starred alongside Taraji P. Henson in Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. Those experiences helped establish her as a rising theater talent.

Marvel’s X-Men Reboot Opens a New Chapter

Boyd’s casting comes after a major change in Marvel’s relationship with the X-Men. Disney acquired 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets in 2019.

The deal brought the film rights to several major Marvel properties under Disney. Those properties included the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool.

That change created new possibilities for Marvel Studios. Fans could finally look forward to the X-Men joining the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Storm will be an important part of that new chapter. Her abilities include controlling weather, making her one of the X-Men’s strongest members.

A Major Opportunity for a Young Black Actress

For Boyd, the Storm role represents a huge step from Broadway to blockbuster filmmaking. She is entering the role at only 23 years old.

Her journey also highlights the growing opportunities for Black women across entertainment. Boyd has moved from university theater to Broadway and now Marvel.

Storm has always stood out as a powerful Black female superhero. The character combines leadership, strength, intelligence, and extraordinary abilities.

Boyd will now have the chance to bring those qualities to a new Marvel era. Her performance could also shape how a new generation connects with Storm.

Maya Boyd’s Storm Debut Is Set for 2028

Marvel’s new X-Men film is currently expected to reach theaters in May 2028. Boyd’s Storm will be part of the franchise’s next major chapter.

The film is expected to introduce Marvel’s version of the mutant team. Details about the full story and cast remain limited.

Still, Boyd’s casting has already created plenty of excitement. Fans now have a new actress to watch as she prepares for one of Marvel’s biggest roles.

For the young Broadway star, the next few years could transform her career. She has already proven herself on stage.

Now, Maya Boyd is preparing to bring Storm’s power to the big screen.
