Desiree Rogers is making waves in the beauty industry as she takes on a groundbreaking role at the 2024 Democratic National Convention (DNC). As the lead beauty sponsor for the event, Rogers is showcasing her commitment to elevating Black beauty through her leadership of Black Opal and Fashion Fair.
Leading the Charge at the DNC
Rogers, a renowned business executive and entrepreneur, is set to transform the beauty landscape at the upcoming DNC, held in Chicago from August 19-22. This role is a significant milestone, symbolizing a full-circle moment for Rogers. Chicago is not only her home but also a city deeply connected to the history of the brands she now leads.
“We had this in motion before we knew VP Kamala Harris was going to run for the presidency,” Rogers told ESSENCE. Her long-standing support for Harris and dedication to civic engagement highlight her passion for both beauty and politics.
Revitalizing Iconic Brands
In 2019, Rogers, alongside Cheryl Mayberry McKissack, acquired Fashion Fair, a historic brand founded in 1973 by Eunice Johnson. Fashion Fair was one of the first to cater specifically to Black women, focusing on darker skin tones. Rogers had already bought Black Opal earlier that same year, another key player in Black beauty.
Rogers has reimagined these legacy brands, ensuring they remain relevant and impactful. Under her leadership, Black Opal and Fashion Fair are not just surviving but thriving in a competitive market.
Bringing Beauty to the Forefront
Fashion Fair and Black Opal are now making their mark on a new stage. They will provide beauty products to ten on-site makeup artists at the DNC, who will work with journalists and hosts. This move marks a significant expansion from the drugstore aisle to the political arena.
Rogers emphasizes the importance of both brand visibility and consumer support. “It’s not always about expansion but about making sure we’re with the right retailers who support our work,” she said. The brands are available at major retailers like Walmart, Target, Macy’s, and Sephora, but Rogers believes ongoing support from consumers is crucial.
A Commitment to Black Beauty
Desiree Rogers’ journey reflects her deep commitment to Black excellence and beauty. From her early career at AT&T and the Illinois Lottery to her impactful role as Social Secretary for the Obamas, Rogers has consistently demonstrated her dedication to excellence.
The revitalization of Black Opal and Fashion Fair, coupled with her role at the DNC, underscores Rogers’ influence and vision in the beauty industry. Her leadership continues to inspire and shape the future of Black beauty.
