Tennis Star’s Media Venture Attracts Athlete-Backed Investment
Tennis phenom Naomi Osaka’s production company, Hana Kuma, has secured a significant investment from The Players Fund. This financial boost promises to provide essential resources for production, development, and strategic growth.
Hana Kuma, meaning “flower bear” in Japanese, was launched in 2022 in partnership with LeBron James and Maverick Carter’s SpringHill Company. The investment will further empower Osaka’s vision to uplift diverse voices through innovative storytelling.
“We are thrilled to welcome The Players Fund as an investor in Hana Kuma,” Osaka stated. “Their extensive network of elite athletes from all backgrounds aligns perfectly with our mission.”
Star-Studded Partnerships Fuel Hana Kuma’s Growth
Hana Kuma’s impressive roster of partners includes Stuart Duguid, founder of sports talent agency EVOLVE, Boston Red Sox owner Fenway Sports Group, and Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite. These collaborations underscore the company’s potential for cross-industry impact.
Last year, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Osaka raised $5 million in a fundraising round for Hana Kuma. This latest investment from The Players Fund further solidifies the company’s financial foundation and growth trajectory.
Fergus Bell, managing partner at The Players Fund, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership. “What Naomi, Stuart, and the team at SpringHill are building with Hana Kuma shall be the framework for diverse storytelling for years to come,” he said.
The Players Fund: A New Force in Athlete-Led Investments
Launched in August 2022, The Players Fund has quickly established itself as a significant player in athlete-led investments. The fund boasts an impressive roster of over 50 athletes as partners.
Initially backed by prominent male athletes such as Ben Stokes and Stuart Broad, The Players Fund expanded its partnership base in December. Olympic gold medalists Jessica Ennis-Hill and Allyson Felix, along with soccer players Nikita Parris and Danielle Carter, joined the fund’s ranks.
This diverse group of athlete-investors brings a wealth of experience and perspectives to Hana Kuma’s mission. Their involvement signals a growing trend of athletes taking active roles in media and entertainment ventures.
Osaka’s Dual Focus: Media Ventures and Tennis Comeback
While Osaka continues to make waves in the business world, she remains committed to her tennis career. The four-time Grand Slam champion recently received a wild card entry for the upcoming Wimbledon tournament, starting July 1.
Osaka joins fellow former Grand Slam champions Caroline Wozniacki, Angelique Kerber, and Emma Raducanu as wild card recipients. This opportunity marks another step in Osaka’s return to competitive tennis following her maternity leave.
