A Beloved Matriarch’s Final Journey

Former First Lady Michelle Obama bid a poignant farewell to her beloved mother, Marian Robinson. On May 31, the family matriarch took her last breath at 86. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Michelle paid tribute to the woman she called her “rock.”

“My mother was a steady force and unwavering support system for our family,” Michelle wrote. “She was always there for whatever I needed.”

Marian’s Unwavering Devotion to Family

Born in 1937 on Chicago’s South Side, Marian Lois Shields grew up in a tight-knit household. Despite humble beginnings with seven siblings, she instilled the value of education as a “ticket to a better life.” Marian married Fraser C. Robinson III in 1960. The couple worked tirelessly, even taking secret loans, to provide opportunities for their children Craig and Michelle.

A Grandmother’s Selfless Sacrifice for Her Family

When the Obamas moved into the White House in 2009, Marian, nicknamed the “First Grandma,” reluctantly left Chicago. However, her selfless decision ensured a constant presence for granddaughters Malia and Sasha. The family’s statement read, “She agreed to move to the White House with Michelle and Barack. We needed her. The girls needed her, and she ended up being our rock.”

A Quiet Force, An Enduring Legacy

As condolences poured in, a common theme emerged: Marian’s quiet strength, warmth, and unconditional love. The family’s statement beautifully captured her legacy: “There was and will be only one Marian Robinson. In our sadness, we are lifted by the gift of her life. We will spend ours trying to live up to her example.” Michelle Obama’s heartfelt tribute paints a portrait of a remarkable woman forever cherished.
