Kenyan Native Breaks New Ground
In a remarkable achievement, Lilian Seenoi-Barr has been elected as the first black mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council in Northern Ireland. This historic appointment marks a significant milestone in the region’s journey towards greater diversity and inclusion.
Seenoi-Barr, a Maasai woman originally from Oloombiokishi in Narok County, Kenya, has become a beloved figure in Derry, where she is affectionately known as a “Derry girl.”
Trailblazer in Human Rights and Community Activism
With a background in social work, community development, and social policy, Seenoi-Barr has dedicated her efforts to fostering integration and understanding among diverse communities in Northern Ireland. Her work with local organizations has focused on supporting marginalized groups, promoting equality, and enhancing community relations.
“This is a reflection on Lillian’s outstanding achievements as a human rights activist, her hard work for the entire community and her unstinting dedication to the SDLP,” said Colum Eastwood, leader of the Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP).
