A Groundbreaking Appointment
History was made when Stephanie V. Daniels took the oath of office, becoming the Miami-Dade Police Department’s (MDPD) first female director. The ceremony, held at PortMiami on January 10, 2024, marked a significant milestone. Daniels expressed her gratitude, stating, “I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude.”
Daniels’ husband pinned her badge, while her son honored his mom’s achievement as the county’s top cop. “I’m just glad that we are able to celebrate you. This is your day,” said MDPD Capt. De’Andre Daniels.
A Trailblazer’s Journey
Appointed over the summer, Daniels became the first Black woman to lead the force, taking over from former Director Freddy Ramirez. Despite Ramirez’s absence, Daniels acknowledged his leadership, saying, “I salute you, and I appreciate your friendship and your leadership.”
With 31 years of dedicated service, Daniels has been a trailblazer. Dignitaries, including Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez-Rundle and Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, attended the ceremony, praising Daniels’ commitment and vision.
A Celebrated Leader
Daniels’ accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. On April 28, she was honored by the National Council of Negro Women Inc. for her work in law enforcement as the first woman sworn into her position.
Local 10 News reported, “As I step into this role, my focus is…to foster an environment of growth, innovation, and excellence with upholding our values and enhancing our capabilities,” Daniels said.
A Promising Future
After receiving a special salute from officers on a boat, Daniels looked ahead, stating, “Engaging the community, making sure officer safety is paramount, and their well-being. Just being out there keeping crime low.”
