Black women entrepreneurs are making waves in the business world, defying odds and breaking barriers. Their resilience, creativity, and determination have propelled them to the forefront of entrepreneurship, making them a force to be reckoned with.
The number of black women-owned businesses has been steadily increasing over the years. According to the 2019 State of Women-Owned Businesses Report, black women-owned businesses grew by a staggering 50% between 2014 and 2019, outpacing the overall growth rate of women-owned businesses by 3.5 times.
Black women entrepreneurs are not only creating businesses but also contributing significantly to the economy. The same report reveals that Black women-owned businesses generated $422.5 billion in revenue in 2019, employing over 2.4 million people so they’re also driving job creation and economic growth!
According to a study by the National Women’s Business Council, Black women-owned businesses are most prevalent in the healthcare and social assistance sector, followed by professional, scientific, and technical services. However, they are also excelling in industries such as technology, fashion, beauty, and finance, showcasing their ability to thrive in traditionally male-dominated fields.
Access to capital has historically been a challenge for black women entrepreneurs. However, despite these obstacles, they have managed to secure funding and grow their businesses. A study by ProjectDiane found that between 2018 and 2019, black women-led startups raised $289 million in venture capital funding.
Black women entrepreneurs understand the importance of mentorship and support networks in their journey to success. They actively seek out opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals, share knowledge, and uplift one another. Organizations such as Black Women Talk Tech, Walker’s Legacy, and Black Girl Ventures provide platforms for networking, mentorship, and access to resources, fostering a sense of community and empowerment.
