By now, we have all been made aware of the viral Montgomery Riverfront fight in which a group of white men attacked a Black employee who tried to get them to move their pontoon boat which was parked in a restricted area.
Instead of complying with the rules, the group of white men jumped the employee. That’s when Black men and women who were in the vicinity ran to his rescue and defended him throwing hands and chairs in solidarity with this innocent man.
Mayor Steven L. Reed Reed released a statement Sunday saying that police “acted swiftly to detain several reckless individuals for attacking a man who was doing his job.” He called the fight “an unfortunate incident which never should have occurred.”
Social media users have already identified the attackers, but some of them have already been detained, and there are four active warrants in counting related to this incident.
Now, the context of where this incident occurred adds so many more layers to its significance. It turns out that just past the dock on Commerce Street, you will encounter former slave warehouses as well as an area where slaves were auctioned. The monuments are still there.
It’s safe to say that this was certainly an ancestral beat down! Our ancestors got a lick back real quick 😏 #BWLM💕 🎥: @mrcrim3
