Black women are rarely allowed to be beginners in public. The expectation is that they arrive credentialed, finish the sentence on the first try and are never watched while they learn. Karine Jean-Pierre, the former White House press secretary and the first Black person to hold the job, has taken a producing credit on a film she has never made and said plainly that she does not yet know how to make it.
She is attached to Terroir, a film directed by Jesse Harris, with a budget target of $3 million to $5 million and a shoot set for Chile in March. Harris directed the 2022 film Borrego, which starred Lucy Hale. Jean-Pierre, who is 51, said she has spent 20 years in politics and that there are many roads open to her from here. “I am not a producer, and there’s going to be a lot for me to learn,” she said, adding that she is excited to learn how these stories get done.
That posture is not new for her, and it is the part worth noticing. She stood at the lectern in the briefing room from May 2022 until the administration ended in January 2025, answering for a president in front of a room paid to push back. In January 2026 she was announced as host of the 17th annual African American Film Critics Association Awards, a ceremony set for February 8 in Los Angeles, and she said then that one of the things she learned in press communications was not to make herself the news. She called her role at the ceremony a tiny part and said her job was to honor the artists being recognized. She also named Alice Dunnigan and Ethel Payne, two of the first Black women in the White House press corps, and said few people know their names.
A career change is an ordinary thing. A woman with that record saying out loud, before the work starts, that she has a great deal to learn is less ordinary, because the cost of admitting it has never been the same for everyone. A reader who is mid-career and tired of performing an expertise nobody gave her room to build is being shown a version of starting over that does not require pretending.
She has not produced a film yet. March is when she finds out.
