Susanna “Susie The Doula” Israel is helping Black families feel more prepared for pregnancy and childbirth. Her work combines education, advocacy, comfort, and postpartum support.
Her journey into birth work started unexpectedly. Israel previously worked as a realtor and data analyst in Houston. Then, a radio conversation introduced her to information about childbirth she had never learned.
That discovery led her to research childbirth and Black maternal health. She eventually trained as a doula and began supporting families through pregnancy and birth.
Susie The Doula Turned a Personal Discovery Into Birth Advocacy
Israel said she became concerned after learning about maternal mortality among Black and brown women. She also watched documentaries about problems within the maternal healthcare system.
Rather than simply learning about the issue, she decided to act. She completed doula training and became certified for non-clinical birth support.
Her decision also shaped the kind of training she wanted. Israel trained with a Black midwife in Texas. She believed that experience would help her better understand how to support Black women.
She Helps Black Families Understand Their Care and Birth Choices
A doula does not provide the same clinical services as a midwife. Instead, doulas focus on education, advocacy, comfort, and postpartum support.
Israel stays closely involved with the families she supports. She conducts weekly check-ins and explains medical terms that clients may not understand. She also shares evidence-based information about newborn care and birth practices.
Her support can also include nutrition journals, stretches, exercise guidance, and birth planning. She said many mothers are surprised by how much information they had not received from hospital providers.
Her Work Helps Families Speak Up in Medical Settings
Israel’s advocacy becomes especially important when families encounter difficult medical settings. She has supported births in hospitals, homes, and birth centers.
She said providers can sometimes challenge a patient’s wishes. As a result, she works strategically with families and care teams. Her goal is to protect patient autonomy while keeping families at ease.
For Israel, teaching families about their patient rights is central to advocacy. She believes informed families are better prepared to communicate their needs.
Culturally Responsive Care Matters to Black Mothers
Israel believes better care requires an understanding of history and present-day experiences. She says culturally competent care also requires compassion, education, and consideration.
She also wants more healthcare providers who understand Black families and their experiences. For her, effective care means listening and treating patients with genuine consideration.
That approach is central to her own practice. Israel describes herself as joyful, positive, optimistic, and nurturing. She says birth work fits naturally with her personality and abilities.
Why Black Birth Workers Matter to Black Families
Israel believes Black families should have access to Black birth workers. She says seeing someone who looks like you can create comfort and familiarity.
However, she also stresses that representation alone is not enough. Families need competent, supportive, and culturally aware professionals. She believes Black mothers deserve care that feels both safe and accessible.
Her work therefore reaches beyond individual births. Israel sees Black birth workers as one part of a broader effort toward better maternal care.
Susie The Doula Is Building Confidence Through Education
Israel’s approach places knowledge at the center of birth support. She helps families understand their options before they enter challenging medical situations. That preparation can give families greater confidence during pregnancy and childbirth.
Her story also shows how a career can emerge from discovering an important community need. What began as curiosity about childbirth became a commitment to supporting Black families.
Through education, advocacy, and personal support, Susie The Doula is helping families become more informed participants in their birth experiences.
