Kroger is giving Black-owned businesses a bigger platform by opening a dedicated section for Black-owned haircare, skincare, and wellness brands at one of its Ohio stores. The new retail space is designed to help customers discover products created by Black entrepreneurs while giving those businesses greater visibility.
The new section was introduced during the reopening of Kroger’s renovated Brewers Yard store in Columbus, Ohio. Company leaders say the move reflects growing customer demand for more diverse products and stronger support for local Black-owned businesses.
Kroger Expands Shelf Space for Black-Owned Beauty and Wellness Brands
The dedicated section features a carefully selected range of Black-owned products focused on haircare, skincare, personal care, and wellness. It offers shoppers easier access to brands created by Black entrepreneurs in one convenient location.
The initiative is part of Kroger’s wider effort to promote Black-owned businesses both in its physical stores and through its online marketplace. Over the years, the retailer has highlighted brands such as The Honey Pot, Partake Foods, and A Dozen Cousins.
By creating dedicated shelf space, Kroger is helping Black-owned brands stand out in a competitive retail market. Greater visibility can introduce these businesses to new customers and create more opportunities for long-term growth.
Brewers Yard Store Reopens After $1.6 Million Renovation
The Black-owned brands section is one of several improvements made to the Brewers Yard Kroger store in Columbus. Located at 150 West Sycamore Street, the location recently reopened after a $1.6 million renovation.
The updated store also includes improvements to departments such as floral, cheese, and dairy. In addition, Kroger expanded its selection of products from local businesses to better serve the surrounding community.
The investment reflects Kroger’s commitment to improving the shopping experience while creating more opportunities for small businesses to reach customers.
Kroger Says Customers Asked for More Black-Owned Products
Company leaders say customer feedback played an important role in launching the new section. Shoppers wanted more Black-owned products available for their everyday needs.
“Our customers have been asking for these products for their everyday needs, and it’s our responsibility to do right by them,” said Mark Bruce, head of communications and public affairs for Kroger’s Columbus Division.
Bruce also noted that the Brewers Yard location is one of five Kroger stores in Columbus offering this type of support for Black-owned local businesses.
“We’re excited to be one of five locations in Columbus that offer this unique support for Black-owned local businesses,” he said.
Dedicated Retail Space Creates New Opportunities for Black Entrepreneurs
For many Black-owned businesses, earning shelf space at a major national retailer can transform a company’s future. It increases brand awareness, introduces products to thousands of new shoppers, and creates opportunities for expansion.
Retail partnerships also help entrepreneurs grow beyond direct-to-consumer sales. A presence in a trusted grocery chain can strengthen customer confidence and build lasting business relationships.
Kroger’s latest initiative demonstrates how large retailers can play a meaningful role in supporting Black entrepreneurship. At the same time, it gives shoppers more choices and greater representation in the products they purchase every day.
As demand for diverse brands continues to grow, dedicated spaces like this could encourage even more retailers to invest in Black-owned businesses and help them reach wider audiences across the country.
