For Pinnock, this role is much more than another acting credit. It is a chance to honor the woman whose fearless performances inspired her as a teenager. Pinnock will perform alongside Kerry Washington, Kara Young, Dominique Fishback, and Kecia Lewis in the off-Broadway production directed by Whitney White. The revival transforms Goldberg’s original solo performance into a powerful ensemble production while keeping its emotional heart intact.
The actress said Goldberg’s work became her first real acting classroom. Watching a Black woman command the stage with nothing but her voice and presence changed how she viewed storytelling. That experience planted a dream that eventually led her to this very production.
“Whoopi Goldberg was essentially my first Uta Hagen,” Pinnock said. “I wanted to study the craft. I wanted to learn her nuances and comedic timing. I wanted to learn when audiences were laughing and what emotional beats she took.”

Long before Pinnock became a television star, Goldberg had already changed the landscape for Black performers. Her 1984 one-woman Broadway show challenged traditional theater by placing authentic Black stories at the center of the stage.
Pinnock said Goldberg proved that artists do not have to wait for permission to create meaningful work. Instead, they can build opportunities for themselves. She believes that lesson remains just as powerful today as it was more than 40 years ago.
The actress later met Goldberg during an appearance on The View. There, Goldberg explained that she created the original monologues because she grew tired of losing auditions simply because she did not fit Hollywood’s expectations.
“She created her own legacy with this piece,” Pinnock said. “Whoopi Goldberg is a once in a generational talent, and a gift. She has conquered every medium of entertainment.”
Danielle Pinnock’s Bold Instagram Message Helped Her Land the Role
Pinnock’s journey into the production was anything but ordinary. She spent nearly a year following news about the show and made her interest known directly to director Whitney White during another theater opening.
Even after submitting audition materials, she heard nothing. Rather than waiting, Pinnock sent White a direct message on Instagram asking if the cast was complete. At first, the answer was yes. However, the very next day, a cast member dropped out.
Everything changed quickly afterward. Pinnock received audition pages on a Wednesday, memorized them overnight, completed a Zoom audition on Thursday, and officially booked the role on Friday.
She described the experience as perfect timing and proof that preparation often meets opportunity when people refuse to give up.
A Powerful Cast Celebrates Black Excellence on Stage
Pinnock says sharing the stage with accomplished Black actresses has been one of the greatest moments of her career. She especially admired working alongside Kerry Washington, Kara Young, Dominique Fishback, and Kecia Lewis.
The actress recalled beginning her television career with a small role on Scandal. Today, she stands beside Washington as an equal member of the cast, something she once thought impossible.
Pinnock believes every actress brings unique experiences to the production. Together, they create stories that reflect joy, struggle, identity, healing, and hope across generations of Black women.
She added that the rehearsal room has become one of the safest artistic spaces she has ever experienced because of the support shared among the women involved.
Danielle Pinnock Honors Her Jamaican Heritage Through Performance
Pinnock portrays the “Jamaican Lady,” a role that holds deep personal meaning. As a first-generation Jamaican American, she sees the character as a tribute to her family’s journey.
She explained that the role reminds her of her grandmother and mother, who both came to the United States seeking better opportunities. Their experiences helped shape her understanding of perseverance and belonging.
Pinnock believes audiences will recognize parts of themselves throughout the production. Every character represents different challenges, dreams, and emotions that many people experience in everyday life.
The show runs through the end of August at the Mitzi E. Newhouse Theater, offering audiences a fresh opportunity to experience the lasting influence of Goldberg’s groundbreaking work through a remarkable new generation of performers.
