Four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka made headlines at Wimbledon 2026 after arriving in a custom all-white outfit inspired by a traditional Japanese wedding dress.
The tennis star stepped onto one of the sport’s biggest stages on Monday, June 29, wearing a look that honored her Japanese heritage while following Wimbledon’s famous all-white dress code. Designed with Tokyo-based designer Hana Yagi, the outfit quickly became one of the tournament’s biggest talking points.
Rather than simply wearing another white tennis outfit, Osaka used fashion to celebrate her culture, blending tradition with modern sportswear before competing in her opening match.

Osaka’s custom look drew inspiration from the traditional Japanese shiromuku wedding kimono, which is commonly worn by brides during wedding ceremonies.
The outer garment featured embroidered cranes and cherry blossoms, two important symbols in Japanese culture. It also included a wide obi belt that shaped the outfit and a traditional kanzashi hair ornament. Underneath, Osaka wore a custom white Nike performance dress inspired by the Japanese paper-cutting art known as kirigami.
The designer also used upcycled materials, including vintage kimonos and fabric from a traditional Japanese wedding dress. As a result, the outfit combined sustainability, culture, and high fashion in one design.

Speaking to reporters, Osaka said she wanted to create something fun while respecting Japanese culture.
“I thought that was really fun. It increased the pressure not to wear a ball gown and drop out in the first round.”
She also explained why the kimono became the foundation of the design.
“I think about the most iconic silhouette, which for me is a kimono. You don’t have to see the color of a kimono to know that it is a kimono.”
Osaka revealed another unexpected source of inspiration. She said she admired Lucy Liu’s white kimono costume in the movie Kill Bill and wanted to create her own version while paying tribute to Japan.
“It was my interpretation of that while also paying a lot of respect and love to Japan.”
