Beauty influencer Elexis Willingham has built a thriving business by doing something many people avoid. She chose to be vulnerable.

Today, the licensed esthetician has more than 400,000 followers, major brand partnerships, and a coveted spot in the Sephora Squad. Yet her success did not come from presenting a perfect image online. Instead, it came from openly sharing her struggles with acne, hair insecurities, anxiety, and childhood trauma.

By turning her personal challenges into opportunities for connection, Willingham created a loyal community that continues to grow.

Elexis Willingham Built Her Beauty Brand Through Authenticity

In a social media world filled with filters and carefully curated images, Willingham took a different approach. She openly discussed her skin problems and personal struggles.

That honesty helped her stand out. Rather than hiding her acne and eczema journey, she shared it with her audience. Her willingness to show both progress and setbacks made people trust her.

As a result, thousands of followers connected with her story. Many saw their own experiences reflected in her content. That connection became the foundation of her growing beauty brand.

From Acne Struggles to Becoming a Licensed Esthetician

Before becoming a beauty influencer, Willingham spent years trying to improve her own skin health.

She researched treatments for severe acne and eczema while focusing on self-care. Over time, she made several lifestyle changes, including improving her diet and building a consistent skincare routine.

“I ended up clearing up a lot of my skin issues through gut health focused eating, a low glycemic diet, hormonal balancing, and building a really solid routine,” she said.

The transformation inspired her to learn more. Eventually, she enrolled in school to study esthetics and cosmetic tattooing. Her goal was not only to help herself but also to help others facing similar challenges.

Viral TikTok Success Changed Everything

Willingham never expected to become a social media star.

Before the pandemic, she mostly stayed behind the scenes helping her husband with his online platform. However, her own journey into content creation started with videos about astrology and everyday interests.

Then one post changed everything.

“I posted something randomly before I got on a flight, and it blew up. It had a million views by the time I landed,” she recalled.

The viral video focused on her zodiac sign, Taurus. She later expanded the idea into a series that generated 40 million views within a week and helped grow her audience to 40,000 followers.

That sudden growth opened the door to new opportunities and a larger platform.

Childhood Hair Struggles Helped Her Connect With Followers

As her audience grew, many people began asking questions about skincare and hair care.

Willingham started sharing lessons she had learned throughout her personal journey. She also opened up about her complicated relationship with her hair.

Growing up as a Black girl with curly hair in a predominantly white neighborhood was not easy. She often felt different and struggled with fitting in.

Instead of hiding those experiences, she shared them through story times and personal videos. Her honesty resonated with followers who had faced similar challenges.

Those conversations transformed painful memories into powerful moments of healing and connection.

Vulnerability Became the Secret Behind Her Success

One of the biggest reasons behind Willingham’s success is her willingness to discuss difficult topics.

She has openly spoken about acne, anxiety, depression, and childhood trauma. While sharing these experiences felt uncomfortable at times, the response from followers showed her the impact of vulnerability.

“There were times where I shared things that felt deeply personal and vulnerable,” she said. “Seeing the flood of comments from people carrying the same experiences, it’s always incredibly emotional for me.”

For many followers, her content provided reassurance that they were not alone.

“It’s about making people feel seen, heard, understood, cared for, and in any small way,” she explained.

Sephora Partnership Marks a Major Career Milestone

As Willingham’s influence grew, brands began taking notice.

However, she remained focused on providing value rather than simply promoting products. Her content combines education with product recommendations, helping followers understand ingredients and skincare science.

“One thing that I really try to focus on is education,” she said. “I love breaking down formulas, ingredients, who products are for, why they work, and how to use them properly.”

Her approach eventually helped her earn a place in the highly competitive Sephora Squad.

After an unsuccessful application in 2022, she applied again and was accepted.

“When I found out that I got in, I was honestly beside myself. I started screaming. I was so excited,” she said.

Elexis Willingham’s Advice for Future Beauty Entrepreneurs

Despite her growing success, Willingham remains focused on building meaningful connections.

She says quality matters more than numbers and encourages creators to embrace their true selves rather than copying others.

“In such a saturated space where people rinse and repeat what they see, what truly sets people apart is genuinely being themselves,” she said.

Her journey shows that authenticity can be a powerful business tool. What once felt like weaknesses became the foundation of her success.

Today, Willingham continues to inspire aspiring entrepreneurs by proving that vulnerability, honesty, and self acceptance can open doors that perfection never could
