Karen S. Carter has been named the new Chief Executive Officer of Dow, marking a historic moment in corporate leadership. After more than 30 years with the company, Carter will officially step into the CEO role on July 1, replacing longtime leader Jim Fitterling.

Her appointment not only reflects decades of experience but also places her among a very small group—she is now one of only two Black women leading Fortune 500 companies. The milestone highlights both progress and the ongoing need for greater representation at the highest levels of business.

Karen S. Carter’s Promotion to Dow CEO Marks Historic Leadership Shift

Dow’s board of directors confirmed Carter’s promotion from Chief Operating Officer to CEO, signaling strong confidence in her leadership. According to company leadership, her deep understanding of the business and its customers made her the clear choice for the role.

Richard Davis, Dow’s independent lead director, described her as “a disciplined, highly respected leader with a deep understanding of Dow’s businesses and customers.” He added that the company believes she is well-positioned to lead Dow into its next phase of growth and innovation.

First Black Woman to Lead Major U.S. Chemical Company

Carter’s appointment is historic in another major way. She becomes the first Black woman to lead a major U.S. chemical company, a milestone that underscores her influence in an industry where representation has long been limited.

At the same time, her achievement reflects broader trends in corporate leadership. While a record number of women now lead Fortune 500 companies, only two of those CEOs are Black women. As a result, Carter’s rise stands out as both a personal success and a significant step forward for diversity in executive leadership.

Karen S. Carter’s 30-Year Career at Dow and Leadership Experience

Carter brings more than three decades of experience at Dow to her new role. Over the years, she has held several leadership positions, steadily building a reputation for strong performance and strategic thinking.

Most recently, as Chief Operating Officer, she oversaw operations across the company, focusing on improving performance, strengthening customer relationships, and driving innovation. Before that, she led Dow’s Packaging & Specialty Plastics division, one of its largest business segments, further proving her ability to manage complex operations.

Vision for Dow’s Future Under Karen S. Carter’s Leadership

As she prepares to take on the CEO role, Carter has made it clear that she is focused on growth, innovation, and long-term value. She expressed both gratitude and determination in her statement, noting that she is “deeply honored” to lead the company.

She also emphasized the importance of continuing Dow’s momentum, stating, “Our focus remains unwavering: delivering reliable and innovative solutions for our customers, and long-term value for our employees and our shareholders.” Her vision signals a commitment to both business success and organizational strength.

Representation of Black Women in Fortune 500 Leadership

Carter’s appointment shines a spotlight on the current state of representation in corporate America. While progress has been made, the number of Black women leading major companies remains extremely low.

Therefore, her rise to CEO is more than just a career milestone—it is a powerful example for future leaders. It shows what is possible with persistence, expertise, and opportunity, while also highlighting the importance of continuing to open doors for others.
