Sarah Bond, the first Black woman to serve as president of Xbox at Microsoft, is stepping down after nearly nine years with the company. Her exit comes after she helped finalize Microsoft’s historic $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard — one of the largest deals in tech and gaming history.

Bond announced her decision in a February 20 LinkedIn post, calling it the “right time” to take her next step both personally and professionally. Notably, she will remain at Xbox as a special advisor to help ensure a smooth leadership transition.

Sarah Bond’s Leadership at Xbox During a Transformative Era

Bond served as president of Xbox for nearly two and a half years. However, her impact stretches far beyond that title. Over almost a decade, she helped guide the Microsoft-owned gaming platform through rapid change — from the COVID-19 pandemic to a major shift toward cloud and PC gaming.

Under her leadership, Xbox expanded beyond traditional console gaming. She oversaw strategy and operations across engineering, product development, marketing, and global partnerships. As a result, the brand positioned itself as a more open, device-spanning ecosystem designed to reach players worldwide.

“I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve built together over the past eight-plus years,” Bond wrote. “PC and cloud gaming are growing faster than ever, our next console is well underway, and together we’ve helped lay the foundation for a more open gaming platform.”

The $68.7 Billion Activision Blizzard Acquisition and Strategic Growth

One of the defining moments of Bond’s tenure was helping finalize Microsoft’s $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The deal significantly expanded Xbox’s portfolio, adding powerhouse franchises and strengthening its competitive edge in the global gaming market.

Therefore, her role was not symbolic — it was operational and strategic. She worked across cross-functional teams to align product, technology, and business strategy during one of the most closely watched regulatory battles in tech. The acquisition marked a bold expansion for Microsoft’s gaming ambitions.

Her departure also coincides with the retirement of longtime Xbox and Microsoft Gaming leader Phil Spencer, who spent 38 years with the company. Meanwhile, Asha Sharma, a senior Microsoft AI executive, has been named the new CEO.

Sarah Bond’s Career, Education, and What Comes Next

Bond joined Microsoft nearly nine years ago and steadily rose through the ranks, moving from corporate vice president to president of Xbox. Many industry observers believed she could eventually succeed Spencer. However, leadership transitions can be complex, especially during periods of corporate restructuring.

Beyond Microsoft, Bond brings an impressive résumé. She earned her undergraduate degree from Yale University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. In addition, she previously held roles at McKinsey and T-Mobile, building a strong foundation in strategy and global operations.

As she prepares to transition, Bond reflected on her leadership philosophy:

“I’ve decided this is the right time for me to take my next step… We’re living through a transformative technological era that will shape the next generation of our industry, and I’m energized by what’s ahead.”

She closed with three guiding questions she has used throughout her career:

“Did I bring my best? Did I help someone else succeed? Did I do my best work?”

For many in tech and gaming, the answer appears to be yes.
