From Home Cooking to Celebrity Vegan Catering
Jamila Crawford Pécou began her journey as a self-taught vegan chef without formal training. Nine years after becoming vegan, she started cooking plant-based dishes at home. Her meals quickly became popular among friends.
“My dishes would be the first to disappear,” Pécou told BLACK ENTERPRISE. Friends encouraged her to cater brunches at a boutique, sparking a new path in her life.
By 2004, she had launched a catering business. Within four years, her vegan creations reached celebrities like Erykah Badu, Common, and Lupita Nyong’o. Her early adoption of plant-based cooking made her a trendsetter before the movement became mainstream.
Building a Creative Brand with EARTHCANDYARTS
Pécou is more than a chef; she is a creative entrepreneur. Her passions span fashion, interior design, gardening, and travel. She built her brand, EARTHCANDYARTS, to reflect this diverse creativity.
The brand allowed Pécou to expand beyond catering. She began organizing experiences for friends, turning her love of creativity into opportunities that combined food, wellness, and exploration.
Through EARTHCANDYARTS, she continues to inspire women to embrace multiple passions while pursuing entrepreneurial ventures.
Curating Transformative Travel Retreats for Women
Pécou launched RE, a travel business under EARTHCANDYARTS, to create restorative trips for women. Each retreat blends culinary experiences, local culture, and wellness activities designed to help women reset and recharge.
“I thought about what the name could be and came up with ‘RE,’” she said. “Reboot, refresh, restart.” Trips are planned around equinoxes and solstices to align with the seasons, helping participants set intentions for personal growth.
She has curated retreats in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Indonesia, Tanzania, and more. Each experience includes an opening ceremony, intention setting, and a spiritual component before sunrise.
Inspiring Women to Embrace Multiple Roles
Pécou encourages women to embrace their identities as entrepreneurs, wives, mothers, and grandmothers. She demonstrates that it is possible to balance personal and professional life while pursuing creative passions.
Research shows that women entrepreneurs often struggle to navigate these dual identities. Pécou serves as a role model, showing that women can build successful ventures without sacrificing personal fulfillment.
Her work emphasizes that embracing multiple roles and passions can create a meaningful and empowering life for women.
Looking Ahead: Expanding Her Influence
Pécou continues to innovate. Beyond travel retreats and vegan catering, she plans to write a new book capturing her travel experiences, recipes, and stories.
She remains committed to inspiring women worldwide while balancing her roles as a wife, mother of four, and grandmother of three. Pécou’s journey shows that creativity, entrepreneurship, and personal growth can thrive together.
