Emerge! Fashion Show Returns to New York Fashion Week

The Emerge! Fashion Show will return to New York Fashion Week this season with a focus on celebrating Black talent. The event will honor stylist Ty Hunter and handbag designer Brandon Blackwood while spotlighting six emerging Black designers, including several Black women making their mark on the fashion world.

Now in its 14th year, the Emerge! Fashion Show has become known for creating space for fresh voices. With its mission of “visibility, access, and support,” the event highlights designers who often face barriers in the industry, especially Black creatives and small businesses.

Honoring Ty Hunter and Brandon Blackwood

Two major figures will be recognized at this year’s ceremony. Ty Hunter, celebrated for creating some of Beyoncé’s most iconic looks, will be honored for his lasting influence in fashion. Beyond styling, Hunter has expanded into tech, clothing, and authorship, using his creativity and positivity to inspire others.

Brandon Blackwood will also be celebrated. Known for redefining luxury accessories, his handbags have become staples at high-profile events. Blackwood has shown that Black-owned handbag brands can stand alongside global luxury labels. Their recognition at Emerge! places them in the same league as past honorees like André Leon Talley, Law Roach, and Misa Hylton.

Black Women Designers on the Runway

The 2025 Emerge! class features a diverse group of designers, including Black women whose collections bring culture, history, and empowerment to the runway. Suzette Opara of 828 Collection will showcase her formalwear designed for the “strong, stylish, and unstoppable” woman. This year marks a full-circle moment, as she first appeared at Emerge! in 2013 and now returns with her evolving vision.

Other designers include Makarassi Couture, representing the heritage of the Toucouleur people of Senegal, and Letwa Billey, a self-taught Brooklyn designer whose work is shaped by her military background. Their participation underlines the event’s commitment to uplifting women’s voices in global fashion.

Building on a Legacy of Inclusion

Emerge! has consistently highlighted trailblazers who transformed fashion while giving a platform to the next generation. According to founder Dionne Williams, this year is especially focused on supporting designers with innovative approaches. “We are more focused than ever on creative ways to support our designers, and our audience is a huge part of that,” she explained.

The runway event will be cohosted by RaVal Davis and fashion personality Nick Arrington. With a red carpet, award ceremony, and runway showcase, the night promises both glamour and purpose. Tickets are open to the public, offering fans and fashion lovers a chance to witness the celebration.

What to Expect at NYFW 2025

As New York Fashion Week continues to expand opportunities for diverse voices, the Emerge! Fashion Show stands out for its focus on Black excellence. With Hunter and Blackwood being honored and Black women designers leading collections, the event positions itself as both a tribute and a launchpad.

Audiences can expect innovative fashion rooted in cultural identity, sustainability, and luxury design. For many of the designers, this is not only a moment of visibility but also an opportunity to secure a lasting place in the industry.
