Cynthia Erivo to Play Jesus at Hollywood Bowl
Cynthia Erivo will soon take center stage in Jesus Christ Superstar at the famous Hollywood Bowl. The three-night event runs from August 1 to August 3 and features Erivo in the title role of Jesus.
Known for her strong voice and powerful stage presence, Erivo brings something new to this well-known rock opera. She is the first Black woman to play Jesus in this major production, making the role even more meaningful.
A Bold Move With a Fresh Take
When news first broke in February that Erivo would play Jesus, some fans were surprised. But Erivo is no stranger to bold choices or public reactions. She’s excited to show the world a different side of this character.
“I’m really excited to sort of give people another viewpoint, idea and picture of what this role can look like,” she told EBONY. For her, the role is about more than singing—it’s about reshaping old ideas through art.
Working With Theater Giants Again
Erivo gets to reunite with big names in theater for this show. She’ll be working with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and music director Stephen Oremus, both of whom helped shape her Wicked journey.
“To be able to step into these shoes and sing this music is really special,” she said. “It’s a nice entry into theater again because I haven’t been there for a while.” The cast and crew have also impressed her with their talent and energy.
Balancing Beauty, Health and Performance
Erivo’s bright smile has also landed her a deal with Listerine. She stars in a campaign that promotes complete body care, including oral hygiene. She believes looking after her mouth is just as important as caring for her skin and body.
“I am deeply proud of the teeth in my mouth and the gift that I’ve been given, including the gap,” she said. As someone who sings and speaks for a living, keeping her mouth healthy is a top priority.
Juggling Music, Movies and More
Outside of Jesus Christ Superstar, Erivo is booked and busy. She hosted the 78th Tony Awards in June and is preparing for the release of Wicked: For Good in November. She’s also releasing new music.
Despite her packed schedule, she focuses on self-care. “I am making sure I eat well and sleep well,” she said. She credits her assistant and support team for helping her manage it all. “I’m making hay while the sun is shining.”
