Hollywood honors Viola Davis with AFI honorary doctorate
Viola Davis will soon be celebrated in one of Hollywood’s most iconic locations. The American Film Institute (AFI) will award her an honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts at the TCL Chinese Theatre on August 8. This honor recognizes her powerful contributions to the world of film and her influence across multiple platforms.
Davis will receive the award during the AFI Conservatory’s 2025 commencement ceremony. She will be honored alongside Walter Murch, a legendary film editor and sound designer.
A legacy of awards and firsts
Viola Davis is no stranger to breaking barriers. She has won an Academy Award, an Emmy, a Tony, and a Grammy—achievements that place her among the few Black entertainers with EGOT status. Her Grammy win in 2023 for the audiobook of her memoir Finding Me sealed the honor.
Her most well-known performances include Fences, How to Get Away With Murder, and King Hedley II. Each role showcased her talent and solidified her status as a force in acting.
More than an actress: a changemaker
Beyond acting, Davis has made lasting social impact. She founded JuVee Productions with her husband, Julius Tennon, in 2011. The company helps open doors for Black talent in Hollywood.
She also gives back through the Davis-Tennon Foundation, which works to fight childhood hunger and support community needs. Her advocacy work earned her the 2022 William O. Douglas Award for social justice.
A growing list of high honors
This AFI honor adds to a long list of accolades. Davis was named one of TIME’s most influential people in 2017. She has also received honorary degrees from The Juilliard School and Rhode Island College, her alma mater.
AFI President Bob Gazzale said, “Their contributions to the art form have inspired audiences around the world.” He added that Davis and Murch will serve as role models for the next generation of filmmakers.
Celebrating with icons in Hollywood history
By accepting this honorary doctorate, Viola Davis joins a celebrated group of past recipients. Maya Angelou, Angela Bassett, and Spike Lee have all received similar honors from AFI.
The August 8 ceremony will take place at the TCL Chinese Theatre, a Hollywood landmark. As graduates walk across the stage, they will see what is possible when talent meets purpose. Davis’ story will no doubt inspire them to dream bigger.
