Dr. Chisara Peace Ngozi Ogbogbo has made history. She is now the first woman to earn a professorship in Mathematical Sciences at the University of Ghana since its founding in 1948.

Her promotion was officially approved by the University Council on May 29, 2025. The decision came after years of dedication to teaching, research, and leadership in mathematics.

A Landmark Moment for Mathematics and Women in STEM

Dr. Ogbogbo’s achievement is a huge step for women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in Ghana and across Africa.

Before this, no woman had reached this rank in the university’s Mathematical Sciences department. Her new title recognizes not just her academic work but also her mentorship and leadership in the field.

In a statement reported by myjoyonline.com, the University Council praised her for “exceptional scholarly contributions, leadership, and commitment to academic excellence in the field of mathematics.”

Leading Innovation and Mentorship in Mathematics

Currently, Dr. Ogbogbo serves as Head of the Department of Mathematics at the University of Ghana. In this role, she has led several reforms, encouraging more young people, especially women, to pursue careers in mathematics.

She was a key organizer of the Graduate School of Mathematical Modelling (GSMM2023) conference. The event brought together top mathematicians and students from across Africa to share ideas and research.

Her dedication to mentorship has also impacted many young women interested in STEM fields. She continues to guide and inspire the next generation of mathematicians.

An Impressive Academic and Research Career

Dr. Ogbogbo’s academic journey began in Nigeria. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from Abia State University. Later, she completed Master’s degrees in both Economics and Mathematics at the University of Ibadan, where she also obtained her Ph.D. in Mathematics.

Her research covers Applied Mathematics, Financial Mathematics, Stochastic Analysis, and Mathematical Modelling. She has published several peer-reviewed papers, including her well-received 2023 work, “Solution to Nonlinear Wave and Evolution Equations by Direct Algebraic Method.”

With over 89 academic citations, her work has gained recognition both locally and internationally.

A New Chapter in Gender Inclusion in STEM

This historic promotion highlights the University of Ghana’s growing commitment to gender equality in STEM. According to a recent report by Times Higher Education and UNESCO, Africa leads globally in the percentage of women graduating in STEM fields.

Dr. Ogbogbo’s success follows other major milestones. Last year, Gloria Agyeiwaa Antwi Botchway became the first woman to earn a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Ghana. She called it “a story of triumph over adversity, of hope in the face of despair, and of the unbreakable human spirit.”

Before that, Ghanaian mathematician Angela Tabiri was named the World’s Most Interesting Mathematician by The Big Internet Math-Off. These achievements show that the space for women in African mathematics is growing stronger.

Looking Ahead: A Message of Hope for Young Women

Dr. Ogbogbo’s promotion sends a clear message to young African women. With hard work and persistence, no dream is too big. She continues to mentor students, many of whom are young women aiming for careers in science and mathematics.

Her leadership in mathematics education, research, and mentorship is not just personal success. It’s part of a bigger movement to open more doors for women in academia and STEM.

As more African women break barriers in mathematics, their stories serve as hope and inspiration for the next generation.
