Lizzo Makes History as Sister Rosetta Tharpe in Upcoming Biopic
Lizzo is stepping into her first major lead acting role—and it’s a big one. The Grammy-winning superstar will play Sister Rosetta Tharpe, the trailblazing musician known as the “Godmother of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” in an upcoming Amazon MGM Studios biopic titled Rosetta.
The singer couldn’t contain her excitement, sharing Deadline’s announcement on Instagram with the caption: “Black people made rock n roll yeaaaah.” She later added on her Instagram Story, “It’s finally out ya’ll. I’m so excited and honored.”
Tharpe revolutionized music in the 1930s and ‘40s by blending gospel with electric guitar, influencing legends like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard. Lizzo’s casting celebrates Tharpe’s legacy while giving Black women in rock the recognition they deserve.
Why Rosetta Tharpe’s Story Matters
Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a musical pioneer long before rock ‘n’ roll became mainstream. She played fiery guitar solos, fused gospel with bluesy rhythms, and performed in ways that broke racial and gender barriers. Despite her massive influence, her contributions were often overlooked in music history.
Lizzo’s portrayal could change that. “This film is about reclaiming history,” says a source close to the production. “Rosetta Tharpe’s sound was the blueprint for rock, and Lizzo is the perfect artist to bring her story to life.”
The biopic’s script comes from Natalie Chaidez (The Flight Attendant) and Kwynn Perry (Tigerbelles), with producers including Forest Whitaker and Nina Yang Bongiovi.
Lizzo’s Acting Career and Recent Struggles
This isn’t Lizzo’s first time on screen. She appeared in Hustlers (2019) as a scene-stealing stripper and made a fun cameo in The Mandalorian. But Rosetta marks her first leading role—a major milestone in her career.
However, the past year hasn’t been easy. In 2023, Lizzo faced lawsuits from former employees alleging harassment and a toxic work environment. She denied all claims but admitted to battling severe depression.
During a recent concert, she opened up about her struggles: “I was in such a dark, deep depression… I didn’t want to live anymore.” She credited a fan’s kind words with helping her heal. Now, she’s channeling that resilience into her music and acting.
What to Expect from the Rosetta Biopic
The film will likely explore Tharpe’s rise from gospel churches to sold-out concerts, her influence on rock music, and the challenges she faced as a Black woman in a segregated industry.
Lizzo’s powerful vocals and magnetic stage presence make her an ideal fit for the role. Fans can expect electrifying musical performances, deep emotional moments, and a long-overdue tribute to one of music’s greatest innovators.
With production details still under wraps, one thing is clear: Hollywood is finally giving Rosetta Tharpe her flowers—and Lizzo is ready to deliver them in style.
