A Legacy of Excellence in Caribbean Hospitality

Janelle Hopkin, President and Managing Director of Spice Island Beach Resort, is redefining luxury hospitality in Grenada. As a third-generation hotelier, she carries forward her family’s legacy while infusing the resort with her own vision of sustainable elegance and authentic Grenadian culture.

“Welcome to the Spice family,” Hopkin often says, embodying the warmth and personalized service that define the resort. Her leadership blends tradition with innovation, ensuring guests experience the best of Grenada’s hospitality.

Under her guidance, Spice Island Beach Resort has become a symbol of Black-owned excellence in the luxury travel industry.

Sustainable Elegance and Personalized Touches

Hopkin’s vision for the resort centers on “an understated, elegant beach vacation” that feels both luxurious and personal. From the moment guests arrive, they are greeted with thoughtful touches, like a signature sorrel cocktail and a handwritten welcome note.

The resort’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its use of locally sourced ingredients and products. “You can have macarons or chocolates anywhere in the world,” Hopkin notes, “but it has to be specific to Spice.”

Even as the resort embraces modern technology, such as QR codes for menus, it retains timeless elements like pen and paper in every room. This balance reflects Hopkin’s dedication to preserving the resort’s charm while meeting the needs of today’s travelers.

A True Taste of Grenada

Hopkin is passionate about ensuring guests experience the essence of Grenada during their stay. “When you walk into the doors of Spice, you know where you are,” she says. “You feel it, you smell it, you meet Grenadians.”

The culinary experience at the resort highlights local flavors and ingredients. Dishes like “oil down 5.0,” a modern take on Grenada’s national dish, showcase the island’s rich culinary heritage.

“You have to taste Grenada,” Hopkin insists, and the resort’s menu delivers with dishes like braised beef short rib in chocolate sauce and butter-poached lobster.

Creating Authentic Connections

Modern travelers seek more than just luxury—they want meaningful connections. Hopkin understands this and has reimagined the resort’s activities to foster genuine interactions.

Events like “Spice Fit Day,” where staff and guests join for yoga and sunset walks, create natural opportunities for bonding. The resort also organizes community initiatives, such as school visits and Earth Day planting activities, allowing guests to engage with local culture.

“People want to feel that connection to people,” Hopkin explains. “They want to eat in people’s homes and experience real Grenadian life.”

Black-Owned Excellence in Luxury

As a Black-owned luxury resort, Spice Island Beach Resort holds a unique place in the Caribbean hospitality landscape. Hopkin takes pride in this distinction, though she focuses on delivering exceptional experiences rather than marketing the resort’s ownership.

The resort caters to diverse needs, offering specialized spa services for natural hair and immersive cultural tours. “It’s not something you see often,” Hopkin acknowledges, highlighting the resort’s unique story.

Her leadership has attracted a growing number of repeat guests who value the resort’s commitment to excellence and authenticity.

Balancing Legacy and Innovation

Hopkin’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Taking over the resort at 35, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, required resilience and adaptability. Yet, her deep connection to the resort and its team has guided her through difficult times.

“I have one son and 220 kids,” she says, referring to her team. “This is my legacy. It’s my son’s legacy.”

Her ability to balance motherhood, leadership, and her passion for hospitality is a testament to her dedication and the support of her “village.”

A Bright Future for Spice Island Beach Resort

Janelle Hopkin’s leadership has elevated Spice Island Beach Resort to new heights. By blending sustainable practices, rich cultural experiences, and unmatched hospitality, she has created a destination that stands apart in the luxury travel industry.

As she continues to innovate and inspire, Hopkin ensures that the resort remains a beacon of Grenadian excellence and a testament to the power of family, community, and authentic hospitality.
