Angel Reese Speaks Out on Pay Disparities in the WNBA

Angel Reese is not staying silent about the financial struggles WNBA players face. During an episode of her Unapologetically Angel podcast, she shared a bold statement about the possibility of a player strike. “I’ve got to get in the meetings because I’m hearing like, ‘If y’all don’t give us what we want, we sitting out,'” Reese said while speaking with fellow WNBA player DiJonai Carrington.

Reese’s comments quickly went viral, sparking debates across social media. Some fans supported the push for fair pay, while others spread false claims that she was demanding the same salary as NBA players. Reese shut down the misinformation, clarifying her stance on X (formerly Twitter). “I never said anything about the NBA. We are prepared to stay at the negotiating table for as long as it takes,” she stated.

WNBA Players Union Pushes for a Better Contract

The WNBA players’ union has taken decisive steps to demand better wages and working conditions. In October, the union opted out of its current collective bargaining agreement (CBA) two years ahead of schedule. This decision forces the league to negotiate a new deal before the 2025 season.

Players argue that the current pay structure does not reflect their value. Reese, who signed a four-year contract worth $324,383, is earning less than $75,000 in her rookie year. Her salary will decrease further in 2025, raising concerns about financial stability for athletes in the league.

The Harsh Reality of WNBA Salaries

Reese has been open about the financial struggles many players face. “I’m living beyond my means. Hating pays them bills, baby. I just hope you know the WNBA don’t pay my bills at all,” she revealed last year.

She broke down the numbers, explaining that her WNBA paycheck isn’t enough to cover her rent. “I don’t even think that pays one of my bills. Literally, I’m trying to think of my rent for where I stay at. Let me do the math real quick. I don’t even know my WNBA salary, $74,000? Babe, if y’all thought… That WNBA check don’t pay a thing.”

Her words echo the frustration of many players who struggle to make ends meet while dedicating their careers to professional basketball.

The Financial Struggles of the WNBA

The WNBA has faced financial challenges since its launch in 1997. The league has yet to turn a profit and continues to rely on subsidies from the NBA. Despite growing viewership and increased sponsorships, salaries remain significantly lower than those of their male counterparts.

Many players have turned to international leagues and endorsements to supplement their income. Reese is among those who rely on brand deals to maintain their lifestyle. Without these opportunities, she and many others would find it difficult to sustain their careers.

What Comes Next for WNBA Players?

As negotiations continue, Reese and her fellow players are determined to fight for what they deserve. They are pushing for increased salaries, better revenue-sharing agreements, and improved working conditions. The possibility of a strike looms large, but for players, this is a necessary step toward fair compensation.

Reese remains steadfast in her mission. “I will continue to use my voice to speak for what WE want & deserve as a league,” she stated. Her leadership and willingness to speak out make her a key figure in this movement.

With the league under pressure to address player concerns, all eyes are on the upcoming negotiations. Whether the WNBA agrees to higher pay or players take drastic action, one thing is clear—Angel Reese and her fellow athletes are not backing down.
