Ayo Edebiri Takes on a Key Role in Barney’s Return
Ayo Edebiri is set to bring a fresh perspective to the beloved purple dinosaur. The Emmy-winning actress will write the screenplay for the upcoming live-action Barney movie. She may also star in the film, making this one of her most ambitious projects yet.
Produced by A24, Barney is being developed in collaboration with Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions and Mattel Films. While Kaluuya is a lead producer, he will not appear in the movie. With Edebiri’s writing talents and potential on-screen role, this new version of Barney is expected to be anything but traditional.

In 2019, when the project was first announced, Mattel Films’ Robbie Brenner teased that Kaluuya’s involvement would bring a “completely new approach to Barney that will surprise audiences and subvert expectations.”
Mattel has remained tight-lipped, but last year, Chief Franchise Officer Josh Silverman hinted that this version would be different from the animated reboot currently in production at Max. “We want to remain consistent with Barney’s authenticity and DNA, but we also want to modernize,” Silverman explained.
Given A24’s reputation for unconventional storytelling, fans are eager to see how Edebiri and the creative team will reshape the beloved character.
Edebiri’s Rise to Hollywood Power Player
At just 28, Ayo Edebiri has established herself as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after talents. She rose to fame as Chef Sydney Adamu in The Bear, a role that won her an Emmy. Since then, she has taken on high-profile projects in both live-action and animation.
Recently, Edebiri voiced Envy in Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and will soon appear alongside Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film After the Hunt. With Barney, she adds screenwriting to her growing list of achievements.
