Honoring a Legend at the Women of Power Summit
Legendary singer and actress Melba Moore will receive the prestigious Legacy Award at BLACK ENTERPRISE’s 19th Annual Women of Power Summit. The event, held from March 5-9, 2025, in Las Vegas, recognizes influential women who have broken barriers and paved the way for future generations.
Moore’s career spans over 50 years, making her a fitting recipient of this honor. Her contributions to music, theater, and Black culture have left a lasting impact, cementing her status as a trailblazer. The Legacy Award highlights her dedication, perseverance, and influence on the entertainment industry.
A Career Filled with Historic Achievements
Moore made history in 1970 when she became the first Black American woman to win a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for her performance in Purlie. This milestone set the stage for her continued success across various platforms.
In 1972, she co-hosted The Melba Moore/Clifton Davis Hour, making her one of the first Black women to lead a primetime variety show on CBS. Her talents extended to music as well. In 1985, she became one of only three Black women ever nominated for a Grammy Award in the Best Female Rock Vocal Performance category.
A Voice That Shaped Black History
Moore’s influence goes beyond awards and records. She played a pivotal role in preserving Black cultural heritage through music. One of her most significant contributions is her rendition of Lift Every Voice and Sing, widely known as the Negro National Anthem.
Though originally written by James Weldon Johnson and first performed in 1900, Moore’s version became a defining anthem of Black pride. It remains preserved in Congressional records, ensuring its legacy for future generations.
Recognition from Icons and Institutions
Moore’s contributions have been recognized by some of the most influential figures in the world. In 2023, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, further solidifying her legacy. Former First Lady Michelle Obama also praised Moore’s impact, emphasizing the power of her voice.
“There is power in allowing yourself to be known and heard,” Obama wrote. “In owning your unique story, in using your authentic voice.”
At 79, Moore continues to perform internationally, proving that passion and dedication know no age limit. As she receives the Legacy Award at the Women of Power Summit, she stands as a beacon of inspiration for generations to come.
