Makayla Cain, a young woman diagnosed with Phelan-McDermid syndrome, has transformed her silence into a powerful message of resilience and self-expression. In the documentary Makayla’s Voice: A Letter to the World, now streaming on Netflix, she gives viewers a glimpse into her unique journey of communicating despite being non-verbal for much of her life. The 24-minute film captures her deep emotions and the strength she found through a letterboard, a tool that has become her voice.

Breaking the Silence: Makayla’s Journey from Silence to Voice

For the first 14 years of her life, Makayla Cain was unable to communicate using words. Phelan-McDermid syndrome, a rare form of autism, left her with limited verbal abilities. However, her determination to express herself never wavered. With the introduction of a letterboard and the guidance of her instructor, Roxy, Makayla discovered a new way to communicate.

Her voice, though not her own words, is brought to life through voice-over artist Portia Cue, who gives Makayla’s powerful messages a voice. “It’s hard work, but it’s worth it,” she shares in the documentary. Her father, music producer Khari “Needlz” Cain, also opens up about the frustration of seeing his daughter struggle with being unable to communicate her thoughts. Together, they created this film to inspire others facing similar challenges.

Finding Strength in Silence: Makayla’s Voice and Her Mission

In the film, Makayla takes us on an emotional journey as she opens up about her thoughts, feelings, and dreams. As she learns to communicate using her letterboard, Makayla reveals how she feels living in a world of talkers. She admits to moments of jealousy over her peers who can speak freely, wishing she could express herself in the same way. Yet, despite these struggles, she has found a deeper sense of understanding and self-acceptance.

Makayla’s goal is to use her voice—through the letterboard—to educate others about autism and the importance of empathy. She shares her frustration with how society often misunderstands her, assuming that her silence means she lacks intelligence. “It’s mean,” she says, a powerful statement that resonates deeply. As a natural poet, Makayla shows that silence is not the absence of thought but rather a different way of experiencing and expressing the world.

Inspiring Change: The Power of Love, Hope, and Determination

Makayla’s Voice is more than just a film; it’s a message of hope for families living with disabilities. According to Makayla’s mother, Manana Cain, the purpose of the documentary is to inspire and offer hope to others in similar situations. Through love and hope, barriers can be broken, and strength can emerge in the most unexpected places.

By sharing her story, Makayla is challenging the stigma around non-verbal individuals and proving that a lack of speech does not equate to a lack of voice. Her message is clear: “You may not speak words, but that doesn’t mean you have nothing to say.”

A New Perspective on Autism and Self-Expression

The film highlights not only Makayla’s journey but also the beauty and importance of self-expression for everyone, regardless of their abilities. Through her powerful words, Makayla shows that the way we communicate—whether through speech, art, or another form—should be celebrated. Her bravery and eloquence are reminders that each person’s voice deserves to be heard, and every story has the potential to change lives.

Makayla’s Voice is available for streaming on Netflix, offering a fresh perspective on autism, self-expression, and the power of perseverance.
