Latham Thomas has been a key figure in reshaping maternal health care, especially for Black women. As the founder of Mama Glow, Thomas is providing much-needed support and advocacy for women during their pregnancy journeys. Through her work as a birth doula, educator, and advocate, she has created an empowering platform that helps improve maternal health outcomes.
The Inspiration Behind Mama Glow
The idea for Mama Glow was born from Thomas’ own transformative birth experience. In 2003, after the birth of her son, she was struck by how positive and blissful her experience was. “Nobody said it would be like this,” Thomas recalled. “This was amazing—how come nobody’s talking about this?” That moment was the spark for her mission to create better birth experiences for other women.
Thomas wanted to make sure that more women, particularly Black women, had access to the same positive experiences she had. After years of working as a doula, providing emotional and physical support for women during pregnancy, labor, and after birth, she founded Mama Glow to expand her efforts on a larger scale.
Mama Glow’s Impact on Doula Support and Maternal Health
Mama Glow’s focus on providing professional doula services has revolutionized the maternal health landscape. Doulas offer continuous support during pregnancy and birth, and studies show this can reduce stress and anxiety while improving birth outcomes. Thomas is passionate about ensuring every woman, especially women of color, has access to this type of care.
By 2018, Thomas had already trained thousands of doulas, with a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion. “Since 2018, we’ve trained 3,000 doulas, 85% of whom are people of color,” Thomas said. This diverse group of birth workers is helping to break down the barriers that often leave marginalized communities underserved in maternal health care.
The Role of The Mama Glow Foundation
Through the Mama Glow Foundation, Thomas is further advancing reproductive justice. The foundation offers scholarships and grants to ensure that women in underserved communities have access to doula services. With a focus on education, advocacy, and the arts, the Mama Glow Foundation is helping to reshape the conversation around maternal health.
By providing resources and support, Thomas is helping to fill gaps in the health care system. “We’re working to advance reproductive justice, making sure that everyone has access to compassionate, high-quality care,” she said.
The Doula Expo: A Game-Changer for Birth Workers
Thomas’ work culminated in the creation of The Doula Expo, an event that has been called the “Coachella for birth workers.” The expo brings together birth professionals, families, and speakers to discuss and celebrate maternal health. The 2023 event in Brooklyn featured over 50 speakers, including notable names like Emmy-winning TV host Tamron Hall and actress Tatyana Ali.
Thomas sees the event as a way to create an engaging and educational space for both aspiring and seasoned birth workers. “It’s an active, fun space for people who are interested in this work,” she explained. The expo is also certified, allowing healthcare professionals to earn continuing education credits.
Looking Ahead: The Future of Mama Glow
Looking to the future, Thomas is committed to further expanding Mama Glow’s reach and impact. Her vision includes creating more wellness experiences, like The Soft Space in Brooklyn, where women can access holistic health services. Additionally, she plans to continue training doulas and expanding Mama Glow’s international footprint.
Thomas’ ultimate goal is to empower Black women and other marginalized communities with the support they deserve during pregnancy and childbirth. “We deserve this,” Thomas said. She is dedicated to improving maternal health care for generations to come.
