Dr. Mumba Chalwe-Kaja has redefined possibilities in Zambia and beyond as the country’s first female urological surgeon. With a trailblazing career spanning over 15 years, she has shattered stereotypes in the male-dominated field of urology and inspired countless women to pursue their dreams.
From a Childhood Dream to Medical Excellence
Dr. Chalwe-Kaja’s journey into medicine began in her early years. She was inspired by a kind and caring female doctor who treated her and her sister. This pivotal moment solidified her childhood dream of becoming a doctor.
“Medicine was always a childhood dream,” she shared with the Zambian Observer. Her decision to specialize in urology came from her love of challenges and her desire to fill a void. Zambia had no female representation in the field, and she wanted to change that narrative.
Her passion for surgery and her determination to defy stereotypes drove her to excel. Urology’s dynamic nature appealed to her, as did its potential to make a positive impact on lives.
Pioneering Achievements in Global Surgery
Dr. Chalwe-Kaja’s academic and professional milestones speak volumes about her dedication. She earned her doctorate from Rayzan Medical University and pursued a master’s degree in urology at the University of Zambia. She achieved the prestigious title of Associate Fellow at the American College of Surgeons and Fellow at the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA).
In 2019, she became the first William Crain Global Surgical Fellow at Stanford University’s Urology Department. Specializing in uro-oncology, she continued to build an international reputation. Today, she serves as the Head of Urology at Ndola Teaching Hospital and works with the Zambian Ministry of Health.
A Leader Beyond the Operating Room
Dr. Chalwe-Kaja’s influence extends far beyond surgery. She authored The Beginners Guide to Urology, a resource aimed at simplifying the discipline for aspiring doctors in developing nations. As an Associate Editor for The Annals of African Surgery, she shapes the future of African medicine through research and collaboration.
Her commitment to wellness led her to co-found Stiletto Ink, a lifestyle group focusing on sexual and reproductive health. She also oversees prostate cancer research as a Principal Investigator at the Tropical Disease Research Centre.
Honoring Feminine Excellence and Empowering Women
Dr. Chalwe-Kaja is a staunch advocate for gender equity and the normalization of feminine excellence. In 2018, she received the PUSH Women’s Award and a Gold Medal for academic excellence from COSECSA. She chairs the Women in Surgery Africa (WiSA) board, working to support female surgeons across the continent.
She envisions a brighter future for Africa where women are valued for their skills and ambitions, not limited by societal expectations. “We must normalize feminine excellence to a point that our gender is no longer an issue to be considered,” she passionately stated.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Leaders
Through her TEDx talks and public engagements, Dr. Chalwe-Kaja continues to inspire young Africans, especially women, to pursue excellence. Her life story is a testament to what is possible when passion meets perseverance. She is not just a pioneer in urology but a champion of progress and change in Zambia and Africa.
