Lashana Lynch is embracing her career and motherhood with grace. The actress, known for her roles in No Time to Die and The Day of the Jackal, is expecting her first child while starring in a leading role and producing her latest show. Her growing bump was revealed at the Jackal premiere in New York City in November. As a first-time mom, Lynch is balancing work with the new challenges of motherhood, all while staying committed to making her character, Bianca Pullman, a powerful representation of Black women in film.
A Glimpse into Balancing Career and Motherhood
In The Day of the Jackal, Lynch plays Bianca Pullman, a detective who must juggle a demanding career while raising a child. This role allowed Lynch to explore the challenges many Black women face in balancing work and home life. “As Black women, we’re not always afforded the chance to discuss balancing work and home life,” Lynch shared in an interview. She went on to highlight how successful women often carry the added burden of managing both their professional aspirations and family responsibilities.
Lynch’s character is more than just a detective; she is a mother, wife, and woman who strives to navigate the complexities of life. Through Bianca, Lynch delves into how women, particularly Black women, navigate the intricate dance of work and motherhood. She spent time speaking to other women in powerful positions to understand how they handled the pressures of their careers and personal lives. “I learned how it affected them as human beings, as well as their relationships,” she explained.
Celebrating Black Women Through Fashion and Storytelling
Lynch’s commitment to portraying strong Black women extends beyond her acting. She’s not only starring in the series but also working behind the scenes as a producer. One of her key focuses was ensuring that Bianca’s look celebrated Black beauty. “We get to celebrate the versatility and malleability of locs,” Lynch said about Bianca’s hairstyle, which was inspired by her experience in the movie Bob Marley: One Love.
Lynch also worked with the directors to ensure that Bianca’s wardrobe conveyed strength and femininity. The detective’s suits paired with sneakers reflect Lynch’s desire to dismantle negative stereotypes about women of color. “This was the perfect playground for me to play with that and deliver a different production,” Lynch shared, emphasizing her role in creating a show that challenges traditional norms.
Shaping a Legacy of Representation and Empowerment
Returning to the detective genre was a surprising yet fulfilling decision for Lynch. After her groundbreaking role in No Time to Die, Lynch didn’t initially plan to revisit the detective space. However, when she read the script for The Day of the Jackal, she was immediately drawn in. “I discovered this was such an incredible opportunity to dive deeper into the Black female experience in this space,” Lynch said.
As a co-executive producer, Lynch has ensured that the show highlights the importance of Black hair and brown skin on screen. “I wanted to develop a timeless show that makes me proud of my legacy,” she explained. By bringing diverse Black female characters to the forefront, Lynch hopes to inspire women who look like her to see themselves represented in complex, multifaceted roles.
The first season of The Day of the Jackal is available to stream on Peacock, with a second season already confirmed.
