Issa Rae, actress and media mogul, is celebrating the opening of Somerville, a Black-owned restaurant that honors South LA’s jazz legacy from the 1940s. Officially opened on November 22, Somerville brings a new dining experience to the neighborhood, blending history, culture, and delicious cuisine. With a menu full of American dishes, craft cocktails, fine wines, and live music, the restaurant promises to be a dynamic addition to the area.
A Nod to the Past: Reviving South LA’s Jazz Scene
The vision behind Somerville is to honor the rich cultural history of South LA during the 1940s, particularly the jazz era. The area was home to a flourishing Black music scene, fueled by artists who were often barred from performing in white-owned venues. The restaurant draws inspiration from this history, with a specific focus on the iconic Dunbar Hotel, once known as Hotel Somerville, which gave the restaurant its name.
The space itself was designed to reflect this era, aiming to celebrate the vibrant Black community of Historic South-Central from 1921 to 1956. Co-owner Ajay Relan shared that their goal was to create a “2020s version” of that time, blending the past and future in a contemporary setting without turning the space into a traditional jazz club.
Issa Rae’s Support: A Personal Connection to the Community
Issa Rae’s involvement with Somerville comes as no surprise, given her close ties to the community. As a partner in Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen, the cafe that shares the same retail complex, Rae has been actively supporting the development of local businesses. In an Instagram post celebrating the restaurant’s opening, she described Somerville as “an ode to the classic, artistic past of Black South Central L.A.”
Rae also expressed her desire for a neighborhood lounge that would complement the View Park-Windsor Hills area, an idea that was brought to life through the restaurant. “Always wanted a neighborhood lounge to complement the special community that is View Park-Windsor Hills,” Rae shared in her post.
A Unique Dining Experience with an Elevated Menu
Somerville offers a fine dining experience that blends creativity with local flavor. Chef Geter Atienza, known for his work at New York’s Bouchon Bakery and Broken Spanish, crafted the restaurant’s impressive menu. Signature dishes include scallop crudo, duck confit, halibut, and collard green lasagna, offering a modern twist on traditional American cuisine.
In addition to the food, the restaurant also offers a carefully curated selection of wines, craft cocktails, and beers. Whether you’re enjoying a meal or a drink, Somerville promises an exceptional experience, further enhanced by live music, bringing the legacy of jazz to life in a modern context.
A Vision Brought to Life by Yonnie Hagos and Ajay Relan
Somerville was founded by Yonnie Hagos and Ajay Relan, who are also behind Hilltop Coffee + Kitchen. The two South LA natives had initially passed on the opportunity to open a restaurant in this location back in 2015, choosing to focus on launching their coffee business instead. Now, after several successful ventures, including Hilltop locations throughout the Southland and Lost Rooftop Cocktail + Taco Bar in Downtown LA, they are finally bringing their dream to life with Somerville.
Relan shared with Eater Los Angeles, “We could have been anywhere in the city, but we’re here with you… on Slauson.” Their dedication to the community is evident in their commitment to building a business that celebrates the culture and history of South LA.
What’s Next for Somerville
With a focus on fine dining, community, and live entertainment, Somerville is poised to become a hub for both locals and visitors. The restaurant is open Wednesday through Sunday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., providing a perfect spot for an evening out. Whether you’re coming for the delicious food, craft cocktails, or the chance to experience South LA’s rich musical heritage, Somerville offers something special for everyone.
