Set against the pristine beaches and lush landscapes of Bequia, the Free Spirit Wellbeing Retreat brought together a group of Black women seeking self-discovery, wellness, and connection. For four days, attendees engaged in transformative wellness practices designed to nurture their bodies, minds, and spirits. From sunrise yoga sessions to cocoa tea ceremonies, the retreat offered a sacred space for healing and growth.

A Sacred Start to the Journey: The Cocoa Tea Ceremony

The retreat kicked off with a deeply moving cocoa tea ceremony on Bequia’s tranquil shores. Wellness practitioner Rae-Dawne John, founder of Free Spirit Yoga, guided the group through the ritual. She explained, “The cocoa tea expands the heart and allows us to examine our relationships with love, with others, and most importantly, with ourselves.”

The ceremony’s warmth and depth invited the women to release emotional burdens and embrace vulnerability. The local cocoa, grown in nearby Saint Vincent, was considered a “medicine” for the heart, setting the tone for the journey ahead. Each sip encouraged participants to reflect on their inner selves and connect with their deeper emotional landscapes.

The Power of Sunrise Yoga: Finding Peace in Nature

Each morning began with sunrise yoga, overlooking the lush greens and calming waters of Bequia. The physical movements combined with mindful journaling allowed participants to explore the connection between mind, body, and spirit. According to John, “Yoga is more than just the physical. It’s a healing modality that taps into all aspects of our humanity.”

The yoga sessions were not merely about poses but about grounding oneself in nature’s beauty. The combination of fresh air, the sound of the waves, and the gentle rhythm of the practice provided the perfect environment for deep reflection and rejuvenation.

Connecting with Nature: The Island’s Healing Energy

Bequia, known as “The Island of the Clouds,” proved to be the ideal location for this transformative retreat. With its unspoiled beaches, waterfalls, and rivers, the island offered an escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Participants like Kayla Harley, who flew in from Washington, D.C., shared their experiences of how the island’s natural beauty enhanced their wellness journey. Harley said, “Being here on Bequia has been an opportunity to slow down, recharge, and spend time with incredible women from all over the globe.”

The island’s serene energy provided the perfect backdrop for self-care and healing, allowing attendees to connect with themselves and each other in a deeply meaningful way.

Community and Sisterhood: Building Lasting Connections

In addition to the personal transformation, the retreat also fostered a strong sense of community among the participants. Over the course of four days, women from different walks of life shared stories, supported each other, and formed lasting bonds. This sense of sisterhood was integral to the retreat’s success, as it allowed attendees to feel seen, heard, and valued in a space designed for personal growth and healing.

Shanika Layne, a local participant, reflected on the unique experience: “Even as someone from Saint Vincent, coming to Bequia feels like a retreat—a place to get away from the everyday hustle. You always leave rejuvenated.”

The Free Spirit Wellbeing Retreat proved that wellness is not just about physical practices but about creating spaces for emotional and communal healing. The shared experiences and intimate setting made it possible for participants to cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness and empowerment.

The Future of Wellness in the Caribbean

This retreat is part of a growing movement in the Caribbean that emphasizes wellness through connection, nature, and community. John, whose personal wellness journey shaped the creation of the retreat, explained that “wellness is a journey, and in the Caribbean, we’re leading that journey in a way that feels authentic to our culture and our people.”

With future retreats planned for locations like Young Island Resort, John hopes to continue offering these transformative experiences. She believes that everyone deserves the opportunity to heal and reconnect with themselves, and through Free Spirit Yoga, she is making that possible for many.
